A Last Look

The above photo was furnished by Keith Hittson, a former MP and now a retired California Highway Patrolman, and shows the wingtip of a passenger plane (probably Braniff Airlines) loaded with troops leaving Vietnam after a year in the combat zone.

The US Air Force F-100 fighter jet provided escort until the airliner was safely out at sea. One can imagine the silence of the troops as they held their breath while leaving Vietnam and then, when the fighter jet eventually peeled off to the right, the troops knew they had survived and were now safe.

There were shouts of joy, laughter, smiles, and perhaps a few tears.

This photo was taken by Keith in August 1967 on his way home.

A great view of a friend to see you safely home. A memorable moment for the passengers.

I saw F100 in USArmy airport in France in 60's. After the departure of US Army of France ,the airport was occupied by Infantry Regiment. In 1975 I was soldier on this place and only French helicopters were present .
I know that an Military JET (old or new) is very impressive to see in the sky ,but difficult to imagine the sensation during a war of the civils or soldiers when they seen one who arrived

Keith, Wish 8 of our Class Mates could have had that same kind of flight.

Thanks Keith. Great picture and great comments and they certainly hit the nail on the head. I still remember very well the feeling as we soared up and up and away and when we landed on the other end of the flight and they played "If your going to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair."

Excellent submission and all passengers must have been extremely happy once in international airspace. Thanks for sharing, Tom.
