Ship Sunk ...

Vietnam

... this merchant ship, carrying a load of cement, was sunk in the Nhe Be anchorage by a mine attached to its anchor chain. The Viet Cong would approach the anchored ships under cover of darkness and attempt to attach mines, just below the surface, to the ship's anchor chain. As the ship slowly rotated around its anchor chain, it would eventually come into contact with the mine and ... well, the result is obvious.

This ship was the RAN minelayer HMAS Bungaree during WWII. (RAN being Royal Australian Navy, and Australia being a large island country in the southern hemisphere).

For the 'guest' below ... this ship was The Eastern Mariner. That said, it probably was in service during WWII and 'could have' been re-named. I'm sure there are websites where you can trace maritime lineages.

I also have a memento found in the wheel house of the ship. It is a small wooden box about 12 inches long by 2 inches square and has a brass plate inscribed Eastern Mariner. Found it in 1966.

Wow! I love how varied each of these shots are. It seems to say a lot about America's experience in the war. Some shots are just calm and often happy scenes of everyday life, mixed in with the evidence of war. Very interesting and well done.
