Aug 11: Original

When I had the Lurker built, I managed to keep hold it's original engine. A sad looking rusty 1964 1200cc that was pulled to make way for my 'hot rod' engine. It's been sitting on the bench for 10 years, and before that, a decade sitting in the back of the unused, pre restoration lurker. It hasn't seen regular use since the early 90's. But I've started to realise just how original this engine is. It still has all of its cooling tin wear. (Thats amazing in itself. My first VW, restored by a VW 'specialist', was missing most of it's cooling system). It turns over with a spanner really smoothly. No one has changed the oil bath filter for an inferior chrome one. The fuel lines are the original cloth braided type, although now had as rock. The fuel pump is original. The carb is the original 28 PICT -1. There are no chrome dress up items anywhere. The coil and condenser (normal service items) have been changed, as presumably have the plugs and points. The fan belt was robbed by me as a spare to carry in the car. It's almost a museum piece. It's got me thinking about putting it back in the car - it was a running engine when I first saw the car. But I think a good clean and a service will be required...

Looks like I'd better plan a trip! This makes me homesick for a time when life was much simpler, and I knew absolutely everything about my car...
