Hi Gene! I guess you noticed I mention you a number of times in my comments. It is great to hear from you! I'm going to send you an email.

Hi Ron, this is Gene Smith. We served together at Cold Bay. I ran across your photos and thought I'd say hi. I retired from the Forest Service and later as City Engineer at Scappose Oregon. Although we live on Mt Hood in. Oregon, Theresa and I are serving six months as intrum pastors at Kobuk Friends Church in Kobuk Alaska. What are you up to. gene_225@yahoo.com

Ron, thanks for visiting my Kansas City gallery and for your kind comments on my pictures of Liberty Memorial. It is, indeed, an exceptional site and I envy you for having worked there. Best, Ben

I received a couple of emails on Cold Bay yesterday and responded to both. Perhaps one of those was yours. Thanks for commenting!

I learned about Operation Clean Sweep just yesterday. I was searching Google Earth for overhead images of Cold Bay AFS since I would like to whip up some realistic scenery for use in a flight simulator. I found myself oddly troubled by the station's demise, as with all of the other remote radar sites in Alaska. As a 1st Lt, one of only two officers on site, it was one of the toughest assignments I had in the AF. One was socially as well as physically isolated from "the real world." Still, I look back at my 11 months on the site as perhaps one of the most unique experience in my adult life, and all I can think of is wishing how I'd done a better job, and gotten more into just being in Alaska. To all that served at CBAFS, and especially to the guys that worked for me and to my two commanders, I salute. Great memories despite adversity. The best kind.

I was stationed in Cold Bay in 1956/57 in the Army with Alaska Communicatrion System. I was on duty at the ACS station the night the Canadian Pacific plane crashed in the bay. Have a lot of great mempries from my year there. Fishing from the long wood pier was something we did often as well as lake and stream fishing. Bears kept our trash cans smashed and scattered on a regular basis.

Hello Ron,
I'm retired AF but I ran the National Weather Service Office at Cold Bay from 1995-1999 and for a short time in 2003. It was good but also strange, I too am originally from the mid-west, Minnesota, and one just isn't prepared for Cold Bay, Baldy and Frosty PK!!!! Had a few "BEAR STORIES" along the way also. Loved the Silver Salmon fishing. My e-mail is rumriver1290@yahoo.com I'm still a legal resident of Alaska but the winters are a lot better in Arizona!!!! I see someone is looking for updated pics of CDB, send an e-mail and I'll make sure you get some (late 90's, 2003 & 2004).

Stationed in Cold Bay in 1952-1953. Radio tech. They were closing base and Northwest airlines was using as stopover it from Japan. Brown bears use to roam the area at nights. Looks a lot different then when I served there. Big brass in service like to hunt bear there.

Great photos. I believe I was stationed with you at 810th Radar Squadron, Winston Salem, NC. I was there Sept '64-66, then off to Thailand.

See you got down to Biltmore House. An hour north of me in Greenville SC I didn't have a still camera Deb54 to Jan56, but have several hours of 8mm of 717th Atatlina. Plan to convert them to DVD soon.

Nice pics. I arrived in July 71 and left July 72. Took a lot of pictures, but can't find them in the boxes of photos I have. Was going to be my retirement projectss, but after retiring for the last time, can't seem to find enough time for those fun projects..
