5800 1962 Plymouth Valiant Front

This was my first car. It was a baby blue 1962 Plymouth Valiant. On December 8, 1966, Dad had gotten up in the darkness of the wee hours of the morning to ride with me to St. Louis. I was to be inducted into the Air Force that day, and he wanted to see me off. Besides, I needed someone to bring my car back home to wait for me until I could return for it. When Dad dropped me off at the steps of the Induction Center, I asked him to drive the car every week or so...to keep it in running condition. It wasn’t until months later that Mom and I were talking and she started chuckling to herself as only she could do. I asked her what was so funny, and Mom told me that Dad had tried to do what I had asked. However, the first time he took my car out for a spin, the muffler fell off! Dad paid to have a new one put on, parked my car, and never drove it again. He was afraid something else would go wrong, and he would have to pay for the repair! Mom and I both laughed at that story, as we both knew how frugal Dad was with his money. Dad probably drew this and other images of my car in 1966-67. His drawings are my only images of my first car, so I am really glad Dad drew them.
