Carl Leusenkamp

If Carl is about to uncork his sprint, better take a step back from the curb!

My mother and father were friends with Carl Leusenkamp's parents.
I liked Carl as a person, he was a fierce competitor. I have pictures
of Carl when we were small, age 4,5,and 6.

I am planning to move west this fall to see my family and rebuild my life.
Hopefully, I will get to meet some of Carl's friends and family.

1974 -- the only year we rode for Mercian, see Carl's shorts.

I knew Carl well, rode with him often and spent a summer living with him and his wife Rita in Portland. Wonderful guy and a lot of fun. In his "normal" life, he was a milk delivery guy for Alpenrose Dairy in Portland, also home of the Alepenrose Velodrome. I went with him on deliveries a few times and it was awesome... he ran almost all the time and I don't think I ever saw him slow down. He definitely had the genes for being a sprinter... just look at his legs. He worked with me on my 200 meter times - I was in the Jr. class at that time, and he told me that when I got my time into the 11 second range, he'd give me his set of USA sweats. Wow, that brings back some memories!

He owned Action Sports in Beaverton, OR.
I bought my first pair of gloves from him. He showed me how to roll them off!

Loved to watch Carl, my dad Frans Pauwels and my brother Dirk. Carl was always amazing to watch. Lots of strength and talent.

Used to see Carl at a bike shop (his?) in Pdx. His quads were so huge we called him, "stump legs". Powerful rider.

This could be the Sherwood Criterium--say 1982 or 83, where Carl came out and showed us roadies how it's done. You have to love the big "ding dong bell" on the handlebars, that is pure Carl. So sad Cancer took Carl from us to early.

Spell Carl with a "C" and you've got it. You got the hard part right!
