I just want to say that I love your art and that I am new to infrared and wonder if you could share some of your techniques ie. post processing software? which infrared filter you use? do you use a converted digital SLR? etc etc. do you give classes at all and are you in Canada?? thanks so much and I do hope to hear back from you. Daniella, I have been looking at the pictures in your galleries and must say, they all look amazing, the Infa Red shot below with the wolf in the shot is outstanding, I presume the wolf was added in Photoshop because know one is that lucky. Been in pbase about a month and this has to be best bird gallery I have seen. Not only great shots but really well organized. How do you get so many good shots? You research the areas where the raptor is and then go there? Camp out? Use blinds? Love the kites, harriers, and falcons.......Been trying to get merlin but they are so shy and so fast.

Hi Daniella. I am so glad I found your site and read your informative posts at dpreview.com. I have saved thousands by buying a 300D, kit lens, and a used 400 5.6 and have captured images that have shocked several members of my photography class who invested thousands in pro gear. I love it. : )

Daniella you are such a great photographer! I've been watching your posts for the past year and love your work. You prove that it isnt the camera but the mine behind it. I just sold all my Nikon pro gear as I have been able to produce better images with a lightweight Canon 350 and lightweight Canon lenses. The heavy pro gear was killing my arm and back and the image quality was not that great. I picked up a 400 5.6 and love it. The rest of the $ is in my son's college account where it belongs! Once again, Nice work!

Hi Daniella, I am a photography student and I have read eveything I could find about your incredible success with the 400 5.6L + Tamron 1.4Tc combo (on this page, dpreview, and FM). You are the most active and clever photographer and poster that I have ever seen! Your work is a true gift to all of us who are in the world of digital photography. I just have one important question that I could not find the answer to: Which camera body gives you the best AF results when you are shooting birds in-flight with the 400 5.6L + 1.4 Tamron combo? I just bought a 350D and I have been worried that it will not work as well with this combo as at has for users with the 20D in this regard. I mean not to bother you with such a tired question, but I am exhausted trying to find which camera you used for most of those in-flight action shots that you report good AF performance with. Kind regards from a new admirer, Derek (aka Shakt on the FM threads) PS. No worries if you do not have the time to answer my question, I am just curious and thought I would try.

Daniella, I just wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much I appreciate your advice on Rebel XT camera settings and techniques. The -2 contrast and + 1 saturation setting to improve dynamic range has helped me take much better pics. This week I used it for nearly black moose in sunlight and white swans in nearly black water.. worked great. Again thanks!

Hey Daniella, I've been a fan of your work for eons, mostly seeing it on the dpreview forum swhen I dare visit that ugly over-moderated place. In any case, Wikipedia (the free encyclopedia) could really use a good example near IR photograph forhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_photography and I think that any one of your pieces would be terrific. In general wikipedia is in need of high quality illustrations which fit well with the articles, ... you might be interested in contributing. Wikipedia requires that media in the articles be as free as the articles themselves, so you need to release anything submitted under the GFDL or Creative commons license... but since you put screen resolution images up on your pbase page where plenty of people probably steal then without attribution, the GFDL would probably be an improvement... and good exposure. :) If you have any questions feel free to email me, or write on my wikipedia talk page connected to my user page at:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gmaxwell

I am sorry but I have no experience with that lens at all and I did not even know it existed until I read your message. You can ask in the dpreview.com Canon SLR lens forum and I am sure there will be someone who know how the lens perform.

Nice and superb pictures you've got there with the Canon Digital RebelXT. I bought the 350D in this part of the world and I a have also purchased the Canon EF 90-300 mm USM lens. I don't know if I have done the right choice by buying the above lens, please advise on that. I love to take photographs of nature and this lens really give the advantage of not having to go near the subject. If there is any advise as to another lens model around the same magnification, please let me know I may be able to return thie for another. Thanks.

Hello, My lens AF a lot faster than yours so I have no problem with ducks in flight. I shoot in Av or M mode and with single focusing.

Great gallery! I have been ataking some photo's of owls and ducks. I got real lucky with the owls but the ducks in flight is a challenge. drebel, 70-300 usm is, shooting in sports mode and manual. My dificulty is focusing with auto it seems to hunt an awful lot and very rarley gets the duck sharp? I've shot in manual at 500-1000 shutter speed and wider F stops to get a deeper DOP but still the results are unsatisfactory. Do you shoot in manual or sports mode? Sports mode does not allow for much DOP but it is supposed to hel with tracking? Let me know your thoughts. TYhank you in advance for your comments. pbase.com/mrbones

hello, I think your photos look good. I use USM in PS amount 400 to 450, 0.2, 0. I don't sharpen my photo on the original size at all, just on the resized image for the web because after resizing the photo loose a bit of sharpness. for resizing I use the default in PS, not sure what it is.

Great gallery, I hope to take pictures as good someday. I was wondering what settings you use to sharpen your photos? Also what settings do you use to resize your photos as well (ie, bicubic, bicubic smoother, bicubic sharper). Everytime I resize and sharpen my pictures, you can see jaggies along the edges of contrasting colors, the edges dont look smooth or anti-aliased. Any help would be appreciated.

I think the Canon with the taped pins is slower than the Tamron. Maybe taping the pins is impairing the AF more. In any case, the 1.4x should give fast enough focusing for panning a bird in flight. if the bird is coming directly at you then that can be a problem even with the bare lens. So when I tried the Canon 1.4x with the 100-400 L lens, I definitly had the feeling that the AF was very slow..and to the point where it was impairing the photos. I did not get that feeling with the Tamron 1.4x adn I don't need to tape the pins, but I did not test this very deeply so I am not sure. My best advise is to go to a local camera store and try a Tamron standard 1.4x tc and see if it makes a difference.

Daniella, First, let me mention that I greatly admire your work! You are an inspiration for me to continue to learn and a benchmark for what I would like to achieve. Second, I nedd some help. I have the Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens and the Canon 1.4 tele-extender with the 300d. I've taped the pins, but AF is hit or miss. Lots of hunting and also very slow, especially when I am trying to pan a bird in flight. What's your secret? I am amazed that you can get it to work with the 2x! Could it be that my mirror is dirty? Hi, I cannot know what is best for you between the 100-400 and the 400mm prime. the prime is sharper but does not have the IS. the prime focus faster and work better with a 1.4x teleconverter. I went with the prime becuase not only I am at 400mm most of the time..but I have to use the 1.4x tc most of the time..so that bring me to 560mm without the crop factor about 80% of the time and sometimes I also use the 2x tc for 800mm about 15% of the time..the rest is about 4% of wide angle shots with the kit lens and 1% missed shots because I am too close. when I am too close with the 400mm prime..I take birds panorama if the bird is not flying away. that compensate for the lack of zoom and give me great res :) I choosen the prime for its sharpness wide open and fast focusing. If you need IS then the choose is easy. Both are excellent and you can't go wrong either way.

Hi... I've enjoyed looking at your galleries over the past months. I have a question or two for you... I hope you don't mine. I am deciding between the purchase of an EF 100-400 and an EF 400 f/5.6. It looks like you have used both lenses? I am curious... do you find you use the entire zoom range of the 100-400? And in terms of the 400 prime, do you find the lens difficult to shoot hand held? I use the Tamron standard. It does not report to the camera so no need for taping the pins. The pro TC will report to the camera and thus the camera will not AF unless the pins are taped. I am not sure the 2x Canon will not be sharper though, I have not tried it.

That is an astounding pic with the 2.0x. I'm sold...the 400mm it shall be (sorry bigma). One question: Tamron makes two versions of both the 1.4x and the 2.0x. The "SP Pro" (more expensive versions) and the regular (cheaper) ones. I'm going to eventually get both the 1.4 and the 2.0. If you are a sharpness freak get the 400mm F5.6 L prime. No way the bigma will have the same sharpness, contrast and colours, even at 400mm and stoped down. the 400mm prime is so good that it can be used wide open and there is no difference. that will not happen with the bigma and I can see the lack of detail especialy at distance on photos taken with that Sigma lens. it is a good Sigma lens but there is just no comparison with the L prime. If you want to use a 1.4x tc, the prime will give you a lot better result and super sharp 560mm. if you wnat to use a 2x the prime will still give you better results. Yep..I can't see much difference between the 400mm prime alone and the with the 1.4x tc. and here is one with the 2x tc wide open, 100% crop unprocessed: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/38615508 I find the 2x tc degradation to be more noticeable at far distance but still not bad. I can see the degradation when stacking both 1.4x and 2x tc on the 400mm prime, or maybe it is just me who can't manualy focus right, not sure. the Tamron 1.4x is better because it will not report the aperture to the camera. the Canon 1.4x should be a tad better for quality but it will report to the camera and you will need to tape the pins. your choice. I personaly have such good result with the Tamron that I coudl not care to pay more for the Canon tc and have to worry about the pins taping.

Hi Daniella Have enjoyed your work and opinions on FM, PBase, and DPReview. Am currenty shooting with a DRebel and have turned into a SHARPNESS FREAK after getting a 17-40L. Am deciding between a Bigma + 1.4x and/or 2.0x Tamron......or going to a 400/5.6L with same tc's. The idea of a zoom is nice but if the 400mm will have more "pop" in terms of sharpness/contrast I'll buy the prime. 1. Will the 400mm have noticeably more sharpness? 2. Is it true that you can't tell much difference with the 1.4x over the bare lens with the 400(I belive you mentioned that in FM's reviews)? 3. Daniella, I have been following your postings in the Digital Rebel dpreview forum for quite a while. I have greatly enjoyed your images and advice. Recently, I have had a problem viewing your images. Early on, I was able to view your images as part of your dpreview forum postings. Hello, Sorry I never owned a 10D but a 300d (digital rebel). I am not sure what is your shapness problem but you must know that Canon cameras don't have a weak AA filter like the Nikon d70 does. They require a bit more sharpening because of that. the 20d is 8 mp instead of 6, so there is an increse in res but it is not all that much I think. Here is a comparison between the 300d and the 20d: I find the 20d about the same sharpness of the 300d when used with the same lens..and that is the main thing here..the glass! cheapo glass give cheapo results. the increase in res is there no doubt..but it is not enough to justify an upgrade I think. I beleive that you may have other problem than just resolution if you can't get sharp prints. I do even with the 300d when I print at 16 x 20. you may have AF problem with your 10D, or it might be that your lens is not sharp enough. Hard to tell without knowing what you use as lens and what is the problem you have. The level of noise from the 300d to 20d is amazing..for exemple, the level of noise from the ISO 400 on the 300d is about the same as the ISO 200 on the d70, but the ISO 800 on the 20d is about the same as the ISO 200 on the 300d. here is a 100% crop, no resizing and no sharpening, straight out of the 20d: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/33957234 and here is one with 2 teleconverter stacked, again 100% crop, no resizing or sharpening and straight out of the 20d..yes it still AF fine with all that, just a bit slower.: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/35889938

Hi Daniella, I've seen you have tested/owned both Canon D10 and D20. I would be grateful to hear your advice about sharpness increase of D20 vs.D10. I own both D10 and Nikon D70 and would be ready to upgrade from D10 to D20 if it's worth in terms of increasing size of my prints. My preferences are landscape and wildlife photography. that bird does have a deformed beak. I don't know if it's from DDT but I would doubt it since DDT has been banned so long ago and this bird is not so old. I saw him again and he was in the same state, so yes that beak is deformed. I was also wondering why but he seems to be living fine with this condition.

Hi Daniella -- On a forum on dpreview, I think you asked me about digiscoping birds (you linked to the woman in Manitoba who does really great digiscopes), and also where to find particular birds, like kites and night-herons. I answered you there, but it was after the thread had died out, and you may not have seen it. In case you're still interested, a good spot where you can find both kites and night-herons is Shoreline Park in Mountain View, go in at the San Antonio Road entrance. Black-crowned Night-herons are in the Forebay, the basin right as you walk in, and White-tailed Kites will fly overhead and perch in trees along the levee trail. Email me if you'd like to know more about where to find birds for photographing around here. You take such great pictures, I'd love to see the results! I have lots of bird digiscopes, most of them not as good as the woman in Manitoba. Mine were taken with a not very good Olympus p & s, though with a good scope. I've recently bought a Canon 300D and am starting to supplement the digiscoping with photographs through that. Just starting to learn -- have a couple of first efforts posted. I guess you shooted the fall in different lighting condition that I did. you must wait until that is a less harsh light without direct sunlight and use a tripod with longer exposure. that also help to blurr the water and that is a nice effect on that waterfall. the photo was shot in RAW..but this it not why the light is even..it is because it is late afternoon and the sun is not the harsh noon sun directly above. We did had some scary moments in the Sierra when there was lighting and thunder at 12,000 feet...You seem to be really close to the lighting when it happens there. I wish that I had the 300d then. As for the shot of the bay bridge...I did not knew about this...nobody bothered us and there was some police car at some point but they did not ask us what we were doing. Why would they forbid picture of the bridge because what hapened in New York? after all you can take the bay bridge easily from the other shore. I don't know where we took it..we had to walk and hike and park farther away..it was not really a street but sort of in the field. We took it from Mistery Island. We parked the car down there and there was a lot of people taking photos from the parking but we walked up the hill in the direction of the bridge. Are you sure about that the authority will not let people take photo? this place seem to be private..not a governement place.

I got here from the your post in the DPReview 300D forum. I looked at many of your pix -- very nice! I'm guessing you live in Northern California since you have pix of some of my wife & my favorite places: SF, Big Basin, Mammoth Lakes area, Little Lakes Valley, and Saddlebag Lake area. (I live in Los Altos.) BTW: you sure had nice clouds in the sky for a lot of your Sierra shots -- often when we've been there the sky is cloudless blue (beautiful to be under, but some clouds sure help the pix.) If you have the time to answer a couple of questions, I would appreciate it. My email is karlgohl@bigfoot.com. 1. Your shot of Berry Creek Falls: Were you able to get so much shadow detail because you used RAW? Here is my picture from earlier this year: http://www.pbase.com/image/18251240/large I had to blend multiple JPEG exposures to get detail in the shadows without having the water blow out. Did you try a JPEG of the same shot and find that you were unable to get shadow detail when exposure was low enough to keep the water from blowing out? Or were you just lucky that the whole face of the falls was evenly lit (I've probably been there 20 times, and don't ever recall seeing it so evenly lit.) Although I've had my d30 for 2 years (and Rebel for a couple of weeks), I'm still trying to get a good feel for how much RAW buys. 2. Your shot of Bay Bridge from Yerba Buena island: I have a book that lists places to take pictures in SF and it calls it "The picture you can't take". IIRC, it says that after 9/11, the authorities won't let people take that shot. If it's not a secret, could you tell me how you got the shot -- where did you park, did anyone hassle you, do you "know somebody", etc. Thanks again for sharing you pix. Karl

Daniella! Your infrared images are such an inspiration to me! I am a Canon SLR user but my first digital camera was the Minolta 7 and I just recently found out that it can capture infrared. It is now being dusted off and ready to experiment! I've been surfing all day looking for information as to the best filter to use. Have you used anything other than the Hoya R72?

Infrared advise needed I have a new Canon A70 camera. The filter I am using is a Tiffin #87 filter. It is black, and sees only IR light. The results I am getting are very Infrared, indeed, but the focus is crap. How is it your pics are so sharp? I know the G1 does great IR...but still..... Could it be the filter I am using is too much for the camera? I am going to get a r72 filter also. Any ideas on how to focus? What do you do?

I am new to IR and I am about to order the D7.I really love your work.Is it possible to aks you a few questions about how you do certain things.One thing I am really interesed in is the ability to capture shots with the cyan and light red color tones.Is this feasible with this camera.?I have read a few forums about your work and it appears you use Photoshop to manipulate your images.I suppose once I take the shot in NIR then the sky is the limit as far as manipulating the image to your own personal tastes and liking. Just wanted to let you know that your photos are tremendous. I have a Kodak digital camera that I've used for 2 years now. It's basically a point and shoot (no zoom on it at all!) I wanted to move up to something that gave me a decent zoom and the Olympus c-700 seems to be the only one with that kind of powerful zoom. I guess I'm just asking your opinion, as I want to start doing some more advanced photo stuff (depth of field adjustments etc). Do you think this is a good choice? You seem to have put the camera thru it's paces, and everything looks great--at least to me! Also, I have seen this camera with prices on the web ranging from $380-$600! Do you have a recommendation as to where you got yours? (I live in NY--have bought on the web before, and would do it again , but would like a second opinion on a trustworthy .com to buy from (if there is such a thing!!!). I am not sure about the lowest temperature but I used it at -20 no problem. I did couple of print at 8 x 10 and they were beautifull. The 2.1mp is not ideal for landscape though, because i would prefer 5mp for leaves details. But well, I have a great camera with an awesome zoom for less than 400$ so i am very pleased with it. Yes i miss the faster auto focus of my SLR, I got use to the new way of taking photo and I use manual focus or I prefocus to about the same distance of the object. Strong light is not much of a problem,in worse case i use the EVF which is very clear even in bright light. The problem is seing through the LCD and EVF (electronic viewfinder) in very low light...that can be really dark and difficult to frame a photo in very low light.

yes totally, even if you are a beginer, you will be happy to have a camera that let you experiment as your skills grow. The c700 can be used as a point and shoot but it still have all the features to let you be creative if you wish to give it a try. Digital does not cost anything...so you learn very quickly by experimenting.

No i think its not a good idea to get a point and shoot as it cannot grow with you as your skills improve. The C700 can be used as a point and shoot if you use the P mode. Leave the camera to P mode instead of Auto mode, as Auto mode will some time boost the ISO value to 400 and give you very grainy photos. In the P mode you can fix the ISO value to 100 but all the rest is the same as in Auto mode and will give you better result. Once you start to learn more about photography, you will be happy to have a camera that can let you experiment, as opposite to a simple point and shoot.

the maximum movie clip in one shot is 15 seconds at maximum quality and i think 30 seconds at lower quality. It is not dependant of the memory card but dependant on the memory buffer on the camera itself. Each clips can be up to 4 megs long, so if you have a big memory card you can store many clips.

This is common to pretty much all digital cameras and it only appear in very specific situations like in strong backlited objects or if the photo is overexposed with strong contrast. It can be avoided by not overexposing the image, Using F8 or F6 and also it is easy to correct in editing software like Paint shop pro or Photoshop Element which come with the C700 i think. My box did not included Photoshop element but i called Olympus and they have sent me a cd by mail.

Maybe, I should have gotten a much less complicated camera as my first digital. Anyways, I would like to keep in touch while i'm learning how to use this camera. Thanks. Much appreciated. How long of an an mpeg can you take (or is that dependent on memory) and can it be left unattended to take the movie or must one hold down the button the whole time? I want to by one today, but i know i can get a better price by ordering it on the web and waiting.

Hello, No I don't miss the image stabilizer much. I found that for me it would be usefull between 1/2 and 1/10 but those are shutter speed I very rarely need. All the acrobat shots were taken without tripod..in fact the only time i used the tripod was on the waterfall photo and the night photos if i remember correctly. Most people will be able to hold the camera at full zoom up to 1/60, but that all depend on your ability. Most people also improve after having the camera for some time. For me it never has been much of a problem not to have IS.

Thank you for sharing your pictures! I am considering purchasing the C700 because of its 10X zoom and relative small size. Although the Olympus C2100 has an image stabilizer, its large size is a concern to me. Have you missed not having the stabilizer? Were your horse / acrobatics pictures taken with a tripod? Have you taken any pictures of moving objects (i.e. sports) that you used the zoom at max (or almost) and did not use the tripod? Thanks, Jim G.
