I joined Simon and Paula, members of the Kiwi (New Zealand) component of JASART (Joint Antarctic Search and Rescue Team), for this training in the Olympus Range and Wright Valley.
We flew in on a Friday night, climbed that night and into the next day, slept for a few hours midday Saturday. That afternoon we began hiking down through the Labrinyth and then down valley to Don Juan Pond, arriving in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday. We camped on the stone-encircled helicopter landing pad to contain our impact on this protected area. Then on Sunday afternoon we hiked down to the Lake Vanda hut, arriving in enough time to get some sleep before our pick-up Monday morning. Remember that the daylight lasts four months this time of year, so we didn't have to do anything in the dark.
Many of these photos were taken by Paula.
