Lebanon ... as it used to be

These are random images of Lebanon, taken in September/October 2004. In light of the current destruction and onslaught going on there right now (and particularly since I now live in the middle east myself), these images have become more personal to me. It is my hope that the assault on this country ends soon, and that rebuilding process, which took so long after the civil war, will soon restore this lovely place to the way I remembered it.

My thoughts and prayers are with my friends and also those who have in one way or another, been affected by these terrible chain of events.

This is my photographic tribute to Lebanon. It is not intended to be a political gallery, but I will not delete any of the comments, even the ones I disagree with.

These photographs are so lovely that I too can shed tears. My eyes swell with tears because of the sheer beauty transmitted by the images and for the fact that such beauty has been ravaged. The ravages of time are accepted, the ravages by the hand of man should never be. Though, most of my tears come when viewing these images because after nearly four years I still miss my Alissar everyday. She brought the warmth of Lebanon's light to me and now it , like her, has been taken from me forever. Whether you have an Alissar, Roudana, Mary or Collette of your own always hold them close when you can. Never take them for granted.Always love them like there is no tomorrow , because nothing lasts forever.

How can I remotely rejoice at violence regardless of who carries it out. It takes an artist whose inner intent is pure and who has love in her heart to show us ( the people who have not(yet) experienced )the beauty of this part of the planet. To guest Israel has many criticizers, many of them, btw, are Jewish or Israelies. It is not therefore true that any criticism of the state of Israel is seen as an antismetic act. The main question you should ask yourself when you listen to someone who speaks against the acts of Israel is whether he holds a basic view that this state has a right to exist. Whether the survivals of the Holocaust (and I hope you are not a denier of this episode in history) their children and their grandchildren have the right to have a small strech of land where they will be the masters of their own destiny. The view of Nassralla, Ahmedinijad, Bashir Al- Assad, and I dare say- Galloway, is not. There are many people out there who think that the Jews deserve to live as any other nation and therefore oppose the Hizboalla, Iram and Syria but nevertheless criticise the state of Israel for many things including some of the actions in this war. I don't think that they are antisemite! Finally, enough with that myth of the Jews conqureing the media and the governments of Europe and USA. Frankly you are degrading the image of the Arabs more than anything else.-a mighty nation with so many states, oil power and enormous wealth. You have your strong lobbies in Europe and in America, there is the Al-Jazeera TV and judging from what I hear and see in the media here in the UK you manage more than often to get the coverage of the events biased in your favour. There is a cease-fire now and I hope that the government of Lebanon will not let any element within its sovereign borders to act for the sake of the interests of other states in the region. In any case he seemed to be his typical self and if you watched his recent public performance, this is not a compliment! A one sided biased loud dismissive representation is not doing any party any good. This is not the right web site to discuss his slogans one by one but it looks to me that more that Mr. Galloway likes the Lebanese and feels empathy to their suffering, he hates the state of Israel. What good is there in the view of someone who is infested with hate? It seems to me that there is enough hate in this conflict as it is.

Mike, The real victims here are the Arabs, Muslims and the Jews. The source of all current problems in the region goes back to Nazi's Holocaust and the British colonialism and their poor judgment and policy. People are people...regardless of race or creed. At the beginning the Jews resorted to car bombing and terrorism against the British forces in the region. Why? Because they were desperate having fleeted the Holocaust and had to use any means they had to press against the British strong military power. You are seeing the same act from the Arabs. This gallery is a tribute to Lebanon (which, by the way, has a very large Christian population, that pretty much nullifies the Muslims v Jews argument in this regard). Just as I do not support suicide bombings, neither do I support military attacks on innocent civilians. Sadly, due to misinformation, a lot of incorrect conclusions have been reached - I make this as a general comment, not directed to yourself personally. Hi Azlin - What's clear to me, before and after viewing the Al-Jazeera video, is that Jews have been repeatedly oppressed and vilified throughout history, yet they always rise above it. In my lifetime Muslims have murdered tens of thousands of innocent civilians with suicide bombings, and to what gain? Is that a progressive ideology, or does it belong back in the Middle Ages? To my knowledge, Jews have never resorted to suicide bombings in the process of rebuilding their lives. Mike

I'm afraid I fail to see how this helps explain the middle east conflict, I am surprised by the amount of misinformation and hatred shown by the presenter, who starts off by saying that this is not a religious issue, and then proceeds to indiscriminately bash the Muslim world at large. I particularly have difficulty seeing anything constructive being achieved here. My hopes are with the Lebanese people and I am sure their resilience will follow through. I pray for peace there. Having been to Lebanon a few times over the last 2 years (the most recent 2 weeks before the atrocities), it was becoming a more beautiful and happier place with each visit I made. Your photos are testament to the beauty of Lebanon being rebuilt after their civil war and I hope you will be able to photograph Lebanon after the rebuilding. I agree with Niall, during my visit there, and in the context of the Lebanese people I have met since, I can hardly describe them as living by the sword. Not going into the rights and wrongs of what is happening, many of them are victims of circumstance, having to disproportionately pay for the mistakes of a reckless minority. Niall, I am with you, once the conflict has subsided, I would be happy to visit there again.

It feels strange to see these given the contrast with the photos that have appeared in the newspapers over the past seven days, but in a way they give you hope the place could one day become completely peaceful...while it is important obviously not to forget, ignore or become de-sensitized to the images of suffering and destruction we generally (and currently) see here in the West. Beautiful gallery.

Wonderful gallery. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to travel there anytime soon because of the renewed warfare.
