Mumbai

Although not perfect, I was pleasantly surprised with Mumbai. According to Indians, the former Bombay is "the most happening city in all of India!"

This album contains only the snaps of crowded streets. This is not the real face of India….along with all these you should also cover the developed urban area and skylines well…Mumbai is happening like any other major city in the world….in fact it is one of the largest cities in the world…You cannot enjoy Mumbai life as a tourist unless you have a local friend to be with you and take you to main places…. Mumbai night life is the main stuff you should experience.

there is no problem showing true bombay but you have forgotten to show or yourself have not visited---the gorgious marine drive at night, malabar hill, the 2 chowpatis, film city, national park, elephanta caves, and amazing bandra fort and many more places---.
Its not clear what you want to convey.

Excellent pictures Brian. I used to live in Bombay from January 2007 until March 2008. I'm actually "homesick" for Bombay but my home is Sydney. I can't wait until I go back to India, Bombay especially.

I read here the same as I saw then: My Mother cried and bitched for 10 years about the dirt, etc. While most of us Kids, learned to love, appreciate and enjoy this most wonderous of cities. What u say? India is became so poor in british era. Now its taking grip. Many things we lost in this period but now trying to stand again in race. Thats what the Mumbai is. Nothing can stop it. Nature also tries it and give up against Mumbai peoples strength of handeling each and every commumnity all together.
In a day, lacs of peoples entering in mumbai, so ofcource its population is. But nobody Sleeps here Hungry. Mumbai is a feeding mom, just try once come here without a penny and see how you take grip in short time. Its magic buddy, I love my mom who feed all peoples, without any distinguish. I love you mom I love you Mumbai.

man, some of the pics on here are truly beautiful, but for me,
bombay or mumbai or whatever it's called wasn't the greatest experience.
all i saw was the poverty and the horrible way many were living. i wish i
could have seen the other sites.

Good pics! Being a bombayite I fell you havent seen it all. Its a great place and I wouldnt live anywhere else after visiting 130 countries. So your pics dont show the Bombay I know. And Bombay...is a name given by the Portuguese. BOM..meaning good and Baia(bay) after the natural harbour Bombay has. God bless

Anonymous, it seems you have only noticed moles on the beautiful city of Mumbai.I call it Mumbai,the original name before it was changed to Bombay as it was less tongue twisting.If you love travelling you should also notice the history of the place you visit.So you really havent seen hell let loose isnt it? Lucky you havent still travelled Darfur. I agree the place stinks at times, but it depends which smell you like to follow dude, the sweet smell of stench or the foul smell of flowers that grow everywhere around the city......yeah, it should be a special thanksgiving for everyone in Mumbai as well, another foul mouthed Mumbai(not Bombay) hater is born........!!!!!!!!!!! - Sam (who was born in that Hell-Hole and still considering himself lucky to be born there)

oh anonymous you haven't really looked at bombay...you've only seen it. you've got to dig deeper than the surface to really appreciate the city.
I worked over in Bombay (sorry I don't say Mumbai as it does not exist - it is purely an idea of a distant modern & 'better' Bombay that is not real as of today) for 6 months as an intern for an american investment bank and being just an intern the company put us up with normal middle class people. I'll always thank them for that as I appreciated the rising indian middle class at it really was, and appreciated more Bombay as it actually is...the residents of 5-star gated hotels cannot have a true insight of India - period.
Photos are amazing...brings back a lot.

Thanks for the memories you brought back Brian, I lived in Bombay back in the 1950's near Santa Cruz Airport just accross the runway in C A quarters old R A F billets the New Termanal building was being built.

Now live in Norwich UK am retired and enjoying traveling round the world still got to go back to good old Bombay (MUMBAI) yuk! yuk!

a very good trip....travelling without moving....bringing back some fond memories.......the street life seems still vibrant n freshlike the past times...... i wish u had time to check out the U.D.R.I.... an extensive library with graphic images of the mumbai of yore.

Great collection. You've truly captured Bombay's kaleidescopic elements. The Mesopotamian photo is actually Zoroastrian, representing the presence of the Parsi community who migrated from ancient Persia and have made India their home since 8th century AD. In fact, the Parsis have played a major role in the rise of Bombay as a financial centre.

This was truly like going back in time. My uncle use to work at the The Khyber Restaurant on 145 Mahatma Ghandi Road in the Fort area. We have properties on Marine Drive near Nariman Point that the British had abandoned after India gained independance. A funny thing though Taxi drivers in Bombay (Mumbai) still think your a Dork if you use the new names for all the old places, so the train station is still VT station, Bombay is Bombay, and my uncles restaurant still exists since the last time I was there in 1977. hey...the mumbai photo gallery is just amazing!! the photos are very 'describing' of the city. im sure you must be an avid traveller. but you havent been to a lot of places in south mumbai. there are many other places which you missed out on your tour. but doesnt matter! the gallery is just amazing!! take that from a mumbaikar!!!

Its agreat siteBUT covers only South Mumbai. The places at Bandra, various discs, theatres(plays) are notcovered. The Hanging Gardens and Marine Drive, the subarban LOCAL trains, dabbawallas, Stock Exchange(Biggest and fastest Stock Market IN THE WORLD), diamond Exchange, Tower of Silence(where Parsees are laid to eternal rest) are missing. What about Manori,Gorai,Chowpatti and Juhu Beach?

All the pictures were well balanced, except for the ones near the airport, they are quite a shock for the foreigners who travel to mumbai for the first time. Just imagine seeing SHANTI NAGAR from the aircraft, its a very daunting sight as a first impression of mumbai.

Just finished viewing the phot gallery on Mumbai. Fantastic pictures. I am a Mumbai-ite and impressed by the way you have presented it. You have pictured only half of Mumbai you missed the balance half...that is the Suburbs!!! And the very important item that keeps Mumbai alive the SUBURBAN TRAIN!
