When the first urban railways were built in London in the 19c they dug out a trench ,laid the track then covered it over.Not very good the deeper you went .so they came up with a metal tube about 10 foot in diameter ,which was slowly advanced through the earth with the workers digging under the protection of this shield.All done with a gigantic apple corer device now.
