Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S. as an annual celebration of Mexican American culture. The holiday began as a form of resistance to the effects of the Mexican-American War in the late 19th century. It gained popularity during the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Although not widely celebrated in Mexico, many Americans now view it as a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.'

The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1904, solidifying its status in the USA.
