A Romantic Day At The Lake

When you see birds flying around your head, they say you've been knocked out, at least in comic books. But that just means that you are experiencing a dizzying feeling. These two pelicans swimming together are definitely seeing birds -pink flustered flamingoes- flying all around their heads. Do you think they could be feeing high and dizzy with love and romance during this perfect date at the lake?

Cecilia, Many things make me like this picture. First the layers which give the picture a multidimentional look - in foreground, the birds on the water and the birds in the air. In the background, four layers, strating with the water and ending with the sky. The presence of the birds in the sky seems almost overwhelming visually (I imagine the sound as well) and yet, the pelicans seem to enjoy a "calm" moment. it must have been quite an experience for the senses.

Thanks Phil for making a point about cliches here. It was very difficult trying not to make just another typical descriptive image about flamingoes, and I wanted to express something about the life and energy about the beautiful life on this lake. With hundreds of birds flying everywhere , I knew I needed to find a single focal point that could express an interesting idea, but at the same time not exclude all that is happening around the lake. The pelicans provided me the perfect subject and the flying flamingoes provided the perfect backdrop and atmosphere. Showing these two different species together also expresses the mutual sharing and peaceful coexistence they have in the same habitat.

The tourist cliche from Nakuru is always a mass of flying flamingoes. You go beyond the cliche by building this image around a pair of floating pelicans, and you use the mass of flamingoes for context. Lake Nakuru is one of the few places on earth where we can see a spectacle such as this one.
