Paul, this is a floating lantern, which when filled with hot air is released along with a silent prayer or wish. The lantern rises gracefully to the heavens and carries your wish with it. In November there are festivals with thousands of people releasing their lanterns, filling the sky with floating light. There is a similar festival where candles are lit and set adrift in water on floating rafts. If you search google images you will see it looks every bit as spectacular as it sounds. However, they are also becoming popular at tourist destination, like Phuket, and you will see small numbers all year round, especially after weddings.
K, I'm not expecting to be here for this years festival, but my 'plans' are fluid and anything is possible.
Please tell us, especially we Midwestern USA people that never get out of the muddy farm fields, exactly what is going on here. Just for the record I really like this entry and love her expression. Paul
