It's likely Phil will never see this, but if you do - did your mystery birds look like Violet-Green Swallows? I'd post a link but the form won't let me! :)

Hi,

I saw two birds yesterday at my home in Prunedale that I haven’t seen before and am looking for help identifying them. Unfortunately I have no photos but their coloration seemed unique. I believe that they were a mating pair as first one then the other flew up to check a small birdhouse on the south side of my barn. I don’t think they approved of the birdhouses and were gone in 30 seconds.

In flight they were about 6 or 7 inches in length, maybe a bit more. It was the coloration on their backs that was startling. A vivid green patch extended down from their shoulders about 2+” long, the full width of their back between the wings. The green patch was sharply defined, did not “blend” with adjacent colors. Immediately below the green was a 1” bright white band, oval shaped, about the same width as the green patch, also sharply defined. I didn’t pay much attention and cannot comment of the remainder of the body colors except to say they were probably combinations of dark gray or brown mixed with a few stripes of lighter colors.

I am native Santa Cruz (1948) and have never seen anything like them before. Any Ideas??
