1976 - view of old Concourse E and the new E-Satellite under construction

Concourse E, Miami International Airport, Florida

The E-Satellite construction commenced about the same time as my first day with the Aviation Department in March 1974. The E-Satellite is fairly well along in construction. The public observation deck on top of old Concourse E has been scaled back to only the dark area on the right half and only out for a short distance if you look at the fenceline. This observation deck used to cover the entire width of the concourse and out almost to the 20th Street Ramp Office which I marked with a "red asterisk" under the center window. This was Airside Operations office at the 20th Street Terminal and it was accessed by a three story narrow circular stairwell from the ground floor. We also had a door out onto the roof of Concourse 4 (later E) in the event of a fire and windows on all four sides that gave us a nice view of the operations going on in the area. The red Braniff is parked on gate E7 and there is another aircraft tail visible just past the 20th Street Ramp Office so that would be gate E12.

The E-Satellite opened in the latter part of 1977 with bus service provided by Airside Operations personnel because the automated Westinghouse train wouldn't become functional for years. The E-Satellite was also a part-time concourse because Terminal Operations would only staff it for 8 hours per day (11am to 7pm) and we would have to assign remote parking positions to aircraft arriving after the cutoff time and bus the passengers in to Customs if we were out of gates on old Concourse E.
