1939 - Howard Johnson's Restaurant on Biscayne Boulevard

This was the first Howard Johnson's restaurant built outside of the Northeastern United States. It was built in 1938. Howard Johnson considered Miami his second home and he wanted to see one of his restaurants here. Growing up, when we went on Sunday drives we would stop at the Howard Johnson's at the corner of LeJune Road and NW 36 Street for ice cream as a treat.

I only remember this HoJos from the 60s. How interesting to see how it looked originally.

My mother had started with Howard Johnson's in Quincy MA in the early thirties, and then helped open the first franchise HoJo at Orleans, Cape Cod in 1935. She moved to Miami to help open this restaurant in 1939. Mr Johnson had been a winter visitor to Miami for years and liked the prospect of expansion out of New England. One of the regular customers during the forties was Al Capone who lived on Palm Island until his death in 1947.

Now this is where the Marquis stands. It's a beautiful building to replace the bygone-time HOJO. I miss it still because I've grown up always seeing it on Metromover, & regret not grabbing a piece of kitschy memorabilia from the wrecking site.

I remember eating at this restaurant, especially ice cream. It is also where I ate my first clam strips.
