A powerful major waterfall, 44m high and 100m wide. It resides in the mighty river "Jökulsá á Fjöllum", which alone drains most of the northbound
water flow from the gigantic 8100 km² Vatnajökull glacier. Note the dirty water, due to its huge load of silt and eroded sediments.
It's average flow rates to 200m³/s, peaking at 500m³/s when flooded. There were plans for building a dam here, to exploit its 300 MW power potential,
but the porous lava ground is too weak and permeable to carry such a water basin. Luckily the waterfall is now embraced by the Jökulsárgljúfur NP, established in 1973.
