NGC7023 and vdB 141 - Iris Nebula and Ghost Nebula in Cepheus

Nerpio/Spain

Embedded in a dense dust cloud lies V380 Cephei, a very young (~5000 - 6000 years old) and hot star, whose strong radiation created a cave in the surrounding material, which reflects the blueish light from the star.
Noteworthy is also T Cephei, the intense red star to the upper left. It is a member of the Mira class of variable stars and was in its minimum phase at the time when the image was taken. Being a red giant in its final stage, it will soon expel its outer layers of gas and become a white dwarf encased in a planetary nebula.
To the very left lies the yellowish reflexion nebula vdB 141. The surrounding dust with its conspicuous shape gave the nick name to this object.
