Earless dragon, Tympanocryptis cephalus

Boulia-Dajarra Road, Qld Aust

This little lizard is about 10 cm long but I spotted him as I drove past at 100km/h, my beady eyes trained through years of
spotting bearded dragons from the school bus as a child. Earless dargons are alert little lizards that feed on invertebrates and
when disturbed run into the shade of a rock where they crouch down amongst the gravel, their superb camouflage rendering
them almost invisible. I chatted to this one for a bit, and after obtaining permission, took his photo. His name is Eric. Eric has his
body pointing towards the sun to minimise surface area and reduce the risk of overheating. The side of the rock he is leaning on
is shaded, further reducing exposure to radiated heat. Eric knows how to keep his cool.
