Seldovia was founded by Russians associated with the fur trade in the early 1800's. It is near an aboriginal village site, but there is no evidence of human habitation at Seldovia proper to 1800. The town's name translates as "Herring Bay", as there was once a large herring population, prior to overfishing early in the 20th century.
