TOKYO - North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, South Korea's military said Thursday, the first missile launch by the country since September.

The Japanese Defense Ministry said what appeared to be a ballistic missile had been fired by North Korea. The Japan Coast Guard ordered ships to remain alert for further information.

The missile launch came amid signs that North Korea may be preparing to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile and conduct its seventh nuclear test, both in November.

South Korea's military intelligence agency provided the latest assessment on North Korea to some lawmakers in Seoul on Wednesday, noting that such tests could occur before or after the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5.
