(rynchops flavirostris)
This is the African member of the Skimmer family which has counterparts in Asia and in the Americas. Like all Skimmers it has a peculiar bill shape with the lower mandible being much longer than the upper. It feeds by flying low over water with its lower mandible just skimming the water surface. These birds were photographed from a boat on the Kavango River near Shamvura Lodge at sunset.
