If we were young and in a hurry, we could have got on a plane, joined in the wedding celebration in Hobart, stayed the night, and been back in Sydney the next day. But being old and enjoying the experiences that old age makes possible, we took six days to get to Melbourne, crossed Bass Strait in a cabin on the overnight ferry, had twelve days in Tasmania with dinner with family and the wedding as high points, before heading back.
Hint for travellers: If you are driving from the ferry towards Sydney, be careful what you tell the nice lady in your GPS gadget about getting out of Melbourne. What she thinks is the short way is too complicated. Instead get her to direct you to the Westgate Freeway via Pohansky Street; Then just follow the signs to the Hume Highway. And take two days to drive to Sydney: there is an excess of good motels in Gundagai.
