I was wandering through a woodland this afternoon, when I stopped for a minute to scan the site for birds or other things of interest. Just about to move off, I looked more closely at a rocky outcrop and was astonished to see this snowshoe hare sitting under the ledge, absolutely still. The only thing moving occasionally was his nose! Of course, this is what they count on to escape predation, remaining utterly motionless. But if he did decide to run off, he'd do so in a fast zig-zag pattern.
You can see that he has almost assumed his summer coat, though winter white is still there in patches. You can also see the huge feet that give this species its name. The feet serve as snowshoes and help the animal to run quickly across deep snow.
