About three years ago, at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, we found a tiny seedling of a tulip tree, which had self-seeded. As this is a Carolinian species, and Ottawa is north of its natural range, we were not sure it would survive the winter. I roped off the site, so it wouldn't get trodden on during winter snows, and crossed my fingers it would survive. It did. And the next winter, and again, it has just survived our last winter which was very cold. It appears to be thriving. There is a tulip tree in the adjacent Arboretum, which has also survived our cold winters, and for sure the seed of our tree at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, came from there. I love the leaf shape!
