2920 headlight.jpg

Belen, NM

A few ATSF 2900 4-8-4s and 5011 2-10-4s received twin bulb Pyle-National headlights near the end of their use. This is a greatly enlarged image scanned from a B&W 8x10 inch photo. It is the twin sealed beam headlight from a Santa Fe 2900 seam loco. Anybody know what the third (middle) light was used for. In other shots where the headlight is not illuminated it looks much darker than the other two bulbs. Is it red? The perspective makes the light look oval, but it really is round.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Paul, my guess is that when the twin sealed beams are dimmed in the face of opposing traffic, the little headlight still identifies the location of the front of the oncoming train without blinding anyone. Just a guess.
