Rainbow, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2003

The rain was still falling as the setting sun illuminated the clouds behind this rainbow. The sun's golden light, displayed in many shades of color, offered a breathtaking context for this rainbow, and only a wideangle lens could embrace its huge arch.

Thanks, Michele, for the kind words on this picture -- photographers have no control over the work of nature. All we can do is go to places like Santa Fe, where the weather can change instantly, and hope to benefit from such sights as this.

Phil, fantastic capture! Appreciate the documentary about the rainbow! Big Vote!

Thanks, Alina, for the compliment. All of my images are based on fact, not fiction. That is what photography is all about as far as I am concerned.

The sky looks incredible. At first glance I thought that you shoot some work of art not real rainbow.

Timing and good fortune are what make rainbow shots work. This is best one I've ever seen as well. It was fortunate that I just happened to be in a photography workshop at the time, Jack.

Hina, I was just writing to you, and here you are. Glad you like my rainbow. Now go with your splendid camera and find that pot of gold.

I'm not a fan of the Wizard, either, Marek. But I can't resist a rainbow, particularly when it embraces a fiery sky.

"I must be over the rainbow". The world would be better without the Emerald City.

Jane -- as for "being there," get yourself out to Santa Fe someday. At 7,000 feet, spectacular things are always happening in its skies. And as for that right lens, your Digital Rebel's zoom would work almost as well here.

Just to BE there at that moment, then to have the correct lens... magic !
