Hi Sheila,

Im a photograper based in Copenhagen, Denmark and read about your case of IP infringement.
Could you point me in the direction of which legal service you used?

You can email me at Jevski(add)gmail.com

Thx.

Hi Sheila, I searched for your work after reading the article about photograph theft on the ABC. I had a similar experience some years ago with the American Kennel Club using my work. They took it down when I pointed it out. I'm just lucky sometimes with photos. Looking at your work, you truly are a master. Such great work Sheila.

Dear Sheila,
I am in the process producing an imovie to accompany educational Australian Aboriginal & PNG exhibits for schools, libraries and passably museums. The main thrust of the exhibit, is to explore Indigenous cultures embodiment of their culture and heritage expressed through their art. I want to challenge the viewers notions of what art is and by doing so get a gimps of the essence of the artist connection with their environment. Most of the exhibit is made up of Aboriginal paintings with a few PNG masks.
i would like to use two of your wonderful shots of Aboriginal Men and am wondering if you allow this usage. How much would you charge.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Annie MacDougall

Mark 20-Feb-2010 03:31
Sheila, Firstly I want to thank you for bring us some amazing images and I am a big fan of your work. I am only thirty one and have a long way to go and so much to learn about photography. I wanted to ask you a quick question how do you get you images so crisp and clear ? Do you use a special setting on your camera or do you use a plugin through Photoshop ? I also shoot raw images with a 5D Mark II and three L Lenses but I just cant take a photo as clear and the same sharpness as you. Any advice or help would be great, thanks for taking the time to email me back. Keep up the good work

Mark

Hi Sheila, very beautiful photos!! I would like to do photos so particular and professional! Do you have done some of these photos with the following coupled: eos 500d plus 24-105mm IS? I would add this type of lens at the 500d body, do you think that this coupled is good or, probably, the 500d body is not good for 24-105, in terms of balance, weight and resolution? Thank you.

Hello Sheila, I came across you PBase while doing a search for Canon D60, a camera that I have owned for some time now. Your images have inspired me to go out and shoot again with the D60 and not go spending money on new equipment!!!! Your work is an inspiration and for that you are to be congratulated.

Sheila, Just a quick note of thanks for sharing your images on line. A serious amateur photographer, I am heading to Australia to start the New Year, and will be spending several days in Sydney. I was searching the web for ideas of what I might try to capture while there. Your Sydney photos have inspired me, and I now have many ideas, although I can only hope to approach your results. Thanks, Andy.

Hello Sheila!

You have this amazing gift to see much more than most of other people (including photographers!). You can also combine what You see with Your imagination, and capture it on a perfect frame.

I had a chance to spend two and a half years in Australia myself. Your pictures remind me of the great time I had back there.

Thank You,

I was going to delete the comment below but I now believe that it reflects more on the personality of this person than it does on my ethics. For the record, model releases are obtained from aborigines and they are compensated accordingly.
Wendy Jopson 18-Jul-2008 00:45
Ethically and legally you are displaying peoples images without their consent. If you are also selling pictures of Aboriginal Australian people then you are also just another thief.
Do you sell these photographs and do you ask permission of the people to display their own images on the web? You may think that you are doing a 'good thing'. but are you really?

Sheila,

Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I did what you suggested and made the black and white photo more contrasted. (I'll put it up, feel free to let me know if that's what you meant.)

I also looked through a couple of your albums (the wildlife one, and the one you suggested; the Shadows and Silhouettes), and absolutely loved them. I'm assuming you use an SLR camera (because you're a little more professional than me). I only wish I could afford one right now, but I'm a 16 year old living on an afterschool teaching program salary.

Thanks for your kind words, your helpful ones, and all of them!

A couple of years ago you helped me with some advice on the 300 LIS f4 and have been delighted with this lens. I have been quite successful in the members' competitions at Pennant Hills PC and Northside Creative Photography in the last three seasons with a Canon 20D. I have a website similar to Pbase... www.planeimages.smugmug where I display my efforts.

I have just ordered a 24-105 f4 LIS and this is why I was looking at your wonderful site again.

Aero Australia magazine has been using many of my aviation images for the past year.

Kindest regards

Peter Finlay

Hello Sheila, You have a style that keeps me inspired. Although I dont have anything as nice as your photo's - I am in the process of going through my photos to find anything good enough to show off.

I very much enjoy your naturalistic style with the b/w images. I just went through an intense b/w period and appreciate how difficult it is to get good tonal ranges, etc., on top of aesthetic quality. Very impressive work, congrats,
Ken

Hi Sheila, I have to say these photos left me really impressed. Maybe one day I could take hots like these. In the mean time i'm stuck in a bit of a delema. I would like to ask you how, How do you know when your work is good enough to pubish. The reason I ask is because im seriously thinking about having a web page desined and am thinking about building some galleries up. Do you just know when the time is right or do you start under advice? Any comment would be gratefully appreciated. Martin UK

I spotted one of your posts on the forum board and decide to check out your work. I am only sorry I haven't seen it sooner. I don't often use the word "enthralled", but that is exactly what I am with your galleries. I watched the slide show, thinking I could sit here for hours looking at these - then moved on to the galleries. Your work is absolutely stunning - and the presentation of it makes me want to go back to my own galleries, clean things up and begin taking a fresh look at things. Thank you for your images and the inspiration. Cheers, Donna

Back to your photos I'm impressed by the variety, the beauty of the face expressions. If your pages were fragmented (like 20 photos per page) it would allow me an easier, less slow view. A thousand thanks anyway.
Guest 15-May-2006 12:19
Really inspiring work, Shiela - got me to set up my own PBase account. I've been an enthusiastic point-and-shooter for a while, and have recently started taking pohotography more seriously. Your photos are a real motivation for me to get out there and try to "see" things.

Very nice photos Sheila. Somehow, your work have some similiarities comparing my work as you can see at my pages www,photoworldwide.com... I have also Canon equipment: Eos 30D and 5D and lenses efs 10-22 (marvellous lens), 50/1.4, 70-200/4L...

It would be nice to change thoughts with you, if you want...

Sheila, I have completely run out of accolades to comment on your photos. They are more than just beautiful, they make me think, not just about the subjects, but the way you have composed the photo, the curves in the right places & the light. Even if I gained the techical ability, I doubt I will ever be able to capture images like you do...I just don't "see" it but I'm glad it doesn't stop me appreciating it. Thank you, you really are an inspiration.

If you ever decide to teach any aspect of photography...count me in!!! I don't live far.

Hi Sheila, I like the softness of your Australian landscape. Panoramas are the best format to expose the beauty of ozi landscape and I noticed that some of yours pans are not properly stitched. I would like to advice you to use excellent program PTGui for this purpose. It allows you to stich not only the panoramas but mosaics as well the way to meet printing standard 300 dpi. I am only amateur but have a look on my site and if you need any help with complexity of PTGui do not hesitate to e-mail me. Thanks for sharing with us beauty of the Australian environment. You're either a professional, or you've been taking pictures since you were 2, because these photos are just amazing! I came across your work on the S&G forum on dpreview and was so impressed that I had to see the rest of your galleries. I have a new name to add to my list of favorites!

Hi Sheila - I came to your site via a link you posted at the DPR Forum for Canon 10D. I have to say, your images are absolutely stunning and I was not only impressed but also very inpsired by them. The subjects, colour, use of light, composition and beauty was really something to see - and, I hope, to learn from. I bought a Canon EOS 10D recently and have been out with it trying to get familiarised with the camera and I am glad to have come to your lovely site - when I go back out again tomorrow, I will try to remember some of the things I have learned by looking at your work. Dear Sheila, I loved the visit to your galleries. There are many great photos here and it will take me a while to be able to absorb them all. So I will visit again later when there is more time and leave more detailed comments soon. In the mean time I am very impressed with "Faces of Sydney", "Beach" and the "Minimalist" galleries.
All the best. Arif

Hi John

Cairns is part of the tropics of Oz and the weather can be wet during the summer months. For the rest of Australia, its good almost all year round. Sydney's wettest month is March and its driest is September (hence the Olympics were held in mid Sept). The light is tremendous here (even in a city as large as Sydney). You need a polarizing filter to cut out glare.

What an absolutely wonderful set of galleries full of beautiful photographs. I have relatives in Mosman (Sydney) and Canberra and they have been telling me all the things I could do with my camera there. After seeing the possibilities through the lens of a skilled photographer like yourself I don't think it will be too long before I visit :-) One thing though... my brother visited recently and travelled up to Cairns and it was so cloudy most of the time that the bright blues and greens were missing from his photos; are there best photographic times of the year for the various parts of Australia?

Dear Sheila Smart,

How are you?

We have invented a new puzzle, KINATO. Please find the attached of the picture of our KINATO for your kindly reference. We are now finding pictures to print on it.

We search on the interent and find some beautiful picture at the website:http://www.pbase.com/. We would like to get your permit to use the photos.

KINATO is formed with some linked shapes, like triangles. We believe it's the most advance puzzle. If you offer us the rights to use your beautiful, we are pleased to send you the one of the puzzles.

Please kindly e-mail to us for further discussion.

We look forward to hearing your prompt reply.

Thank you very much.

Hi Sheila! Was just browsing the PBASE sits and came across yours and wanted to let you know that I'm very impressed with your photos!! I have a Nikon Coolpix 5000 camera but still prefer my film cameras (Nikon F-100 & F-80) as I take a lot of wildlife shots and don't like the lag time between shots. Plus the Coolpix 5000 has a zoom range of only 28-85mm in 35mm film equivalent!! Granted I do have the tele-extender but it takes time to mount it! And as I have a Sigma 50-500 zoom lens why bother and miss the great shots! The 5000 is used for scenics and the like. Well you take care and hope you visit my site. Cheers Sheila. Bill Gumbleton.

Hi Monique

Thanks for your kind comments. I too went from the G2 to the D60 and have never looked back. Its a wonderful camera but this is just where your expense starts! My advice is buy the best lenses you can afford - such as L lenses. My favourite at the moment is my 300 f/4 L IS. I hardly ever use my 70-200 f/4 L since buying the 300 from a friend. In hindsight, the way to go are prime lenses with the exception of a good wide angle zoom. A site to look at ishttp://www.cmpsolv.com/photozone/resultEOS.htm which is a survey of Canon lenses. Good luck with your D60 and hope to see you post some shots on Fred Miranda.

Sheila Smart17-Jan-2003 22:58
Hi Daniel

Glad you liked my images of Sydney - as you know, its a wonderfully photogenic place. I used to have a G2 but after four months, was itching to buy an SLR. If you have Photoshop 6 or 7, you can use Fred Miranda's actions (which sharpen, save for web etc and a whole lot more)and which is a darn sight quicker than using the unsharp mask etc in PS. Fred's site is an excellent forum. You can find it onhttp://www.fredmiranda.com The folk that use the site are extremely helpful (and polite!) I also have a gallery at Shutterfreaks which is much more professional looking than PBase. By the way, you don't want to download to any site large uncompressed photographs as they can then be easily downloaded and used to someone without authority. The smaller the better.

Cheers

Hi Sheila, very much like your work, and was amused to see a few recognisable characters that I also saw whilst there over Christmas and New Year. I thought you may like to see my own gallery - www.pbase.com/deejayhart - this seems to be the best one out there, although I would *prefer* it if there were a way to link from a personal website without the whole community and top banner being present, still, no matter really. My site is www.djh-graphics.com although it is getting redone shortly. I have a Canon G2 and am delighted with the results, although I have a few issues with how to best use pbase - should I upload the 4MP files as they are, or resize them? I opted for the latter, and did batch processing in photoshop with a slight unsharp mask. To me, they could be a little better, but I was wondering what tips you might have to save time and get the best results?

Thanks again,
Daniel - Oxford, UK.

Thanks Stu for your kind comments. I am about to post the other side of living in what my husband and I consider paradise. The bushfires are terrible in Sydney at the moment and I have taken a shot of one near where we live. I don't use PBase much any more as it constantly crashes. I have a gallery at Shutterfreaks which is much more stable and professional. Good luck buying the new lens! Just explain to your wife - it could be worse - you could suddenly develop an interest in motorcycles which my 56 year old husband has just done - hence the fact that I didn't feel too bad buying a D60!

Hello Sheila,
On a rainy snowy day in South Caroilina how nice to enjoy pictures of blue skies and the beauty of a city some 7,000 miles away. Thanks for posting some great shot and best wishes for continued success in the field of photography!

I'm a happy D30 owner about to add a new lens (active post on DP Review) which is source for my link-up with your site. I'm leaning toward the 135mm f2.0L prime to compliment a 50 f1.4 & 28-135IS, however, as I have yet to consult with my wife of 45 years, all preceding concerning a new lens may be academic! LOL
