According to the dictionary a museum is "an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study and display of object of lasting interest of value." It seems obvious that there is interest and value in this museum. But like any art it will mean different things to different people. To some whites it is a slam on white people. To others it is a testament of how far both white and black people have come. But it is definitely part of the history of this great country. Yes, I do believe it is a great country. There are places in the world that still encourage this type of hate. Just ask a person from India who has ever lived in the Philippines. Try to take the children’s book “Twas the Night before Christmas” into Saudi Arabia and you will see prejudices still exist. To not have it would be to deny that it all existed such as some people deny the holocaust ever happened. Perhaps this old Russian proverb will put it in perspective; “Dwell on the past and lose an eye, forget the past and lose both eyes.”

To be perfectly honest I am quite interested in racism & how it all came to be at our doors. Racism is for ignorant people that think very low of themselves so they need to bash/hate on someone who is different to make themselves feel better. I went to the Museum of the Holocaust in Wa. DC & it was such an amazing/depressing place. I would love to go to this museum & take my children.

Oh & to those who don't want to mix religion with science:

What if God made Adam & Eve & be the first homo sapiens? What if we as humans DID evolved from the monkeys & Adam & Eve were the first ones to do so? Maybe God intended it that way...

All humans came from Africa more than millions of years ago and as they traveled the Earth (according to the theory of all the continent being one big mass... look it up cause all the continents can be put together like in a puzzle & thei fit) the races began defining. Why is the white man hairer than the black man? Because it went northern up where it was colder & there was a need for protection from the weather elements...

I can keep going on this but I'm not... by the way, to those who say that USA belongs to the whites, no it doesn't. It belongs to the people that were there first. The Indian Americans, so if you want your land back... go to England, pilgrim.

Oh I'm hispanic & I'd love it if you included some hispanic memorabilia in this museum too.

I frankly don't see what is so bad about some of this stuff. I collect black Americana and my kitchen and living room walls are full of tin signs: Picaninny Freeze, Aunt Jemima, etc.

Its a product of the time, that doesn't make it "racist". Oh, and by the way, I'm Jewish so don't get on what that "you must be a KKK member" stuff.

As a white man who grew up in the Jim Crow South, this is dumbfounding. I knew things were bad, but this stuff is god-awful. It shakes your belief in the goodness of human-kind.

hello.i am a young black student.the only reason i stumbled upon this website is because i choose "jim crow laws" for a project. i never imagined it to be this horrific.i am shocked and i was looking through these pictures with my mother feeling anger rising in my heart. i asked my mom did the pictures make her mad.and she said "no im used to it i saw all these things when i was young...i am just greatful of how far we have come"...i am happy that my mom is helping me understand this past.but my school on the other hand is doing a horrible job at teaching us black history.every year when februray comes around all you hear about is MLK and Rosa Parks. they were important dont get me wrong but what about the seriousness of jim crow laws and what about the lynches and what about the tuskeegee air men and what about black face and what about the experiments performed on black men and what about all the beatings....what about those things ...why doesnt my school teach me about those things...older people blame young people and rappers for bringing back racsim and being ignorant.but there is a reason... we arent being tought properly. you should blame the schools for not having the teachers teach us our history .and you should blame the parents for not teaching their children.if you teach us. we will want to learn. afterall it is our history... after what my mom told me about our history i got on the internet to find out more about my cultures history. it starts with the parents and schools.how will we learn if we are never tought.

The exhibition appears to be limited to real world objects with a verifiable concrete history and provenance. The mythology of emancipated slaves rampaging has no verifiable support in documents or records. The feasibility of a campaign of retribution being conducted under the circumstances is impossibly small. This myth of slaves forcing whites to hate them is as convoluted now as the day it was fabricated.

This exhibit is A BEAUTIFUL example to show how far AFRICAN AMERICANS have came a long way. This exhibit is showing us the past on how ignorant individuals were and from looking at some of the comments still are. Mr. Larry you claim that it was peaceful when racism, slave, and ect existed. How crude are you? That means you as an individual agree with killings,rape, and in slavement of a human being Larry your the one with the problem. The man who said Afican Americans have a place? So I guess my place as A STRONG AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN is where? Because last I checked it was at Howard University a Prestigious ALL BLACK University, Graudrate School at Cornell University which is taking me right up to Wall Street. So excatly where is NERGOS place because Im still trying to figure that one out. Blacks,Jews, and Indians has been through hell and back and where still here and strong as ever. What obstacle has your race encounter????? The comments some of you are leaving are down right ignorant and it's not a good look.

I used to feel bad for blacks. Now I don't. They pretty much have 90% of white people on board with their agenda. The only true minority left in America is white people, who don't hate themselves for being white. Obama being president is only a symptom of a much deeper decay. The Muslim world is on the rise. “We are a congregation which is unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian,” says the Trinity United Church of Christ’s website in Chicago. “We are an African people and remain true to our native land, the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”

That’s just the beginning. The church has a “non-negotiable commitment to Africa,” according to its website, and its pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. subscribes to what is called the Black Value System.

Blacks are the degradation of American society. Larry was speaking the truth in terms of segregation. I currently live in San Francisco, and believe you me- I'm voting for Mc Cain. Larry has "white washed" the past. As the child of a Native American mother and a German father, I grew up in an all African American neighborhood (back then my friends and I just said black). My father worked days as a janitor for an aerospace company and nights at a mini mart (we called them liquor stores then). I remember the feeling of safety I felt as a child in this neighborhood. We never locked our doors. I remember the old woman that held sunday school in her house every sunday. We would go for the applesauce cake she would give us afterward, but along the way came to love the lord. I remember playing ball in the streets and watching tv over each other houses. We were welcome in every house. All of the neighborhood mothers would feed us, make sure we were safe and give us a good chewing out when we acted up. I had such a happy childhood amongst my african american friends and neighbors. My father went to the local community college and worked his way up to facilities manager at the aerospace company and was offered a job in Texas in charge of his own manufacturing plant. He got a huge raise and off we went. We moved into a white, upper middle class neighborhood and there I got to witness my first murder. Our house was robbed by druggies. Eventually over time, booze gave way to the army of meth heads that now live there. It is a scary place.
I am not knocking white people either. In every race I have encountered, I have met wonderful, loving people and some that were not so wonderful. Crime, drugs, vandalism, etc. None of it was ever the product of race. I always found it in certain neighborhoods that had nothing to do with race. Everyone starts off on equal footing with me. Well, maybe not Larry. His ignorance has lowered him in my eyes. His mother did a poor job teaching him about love.

Maybe Larry should take a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis to see the suffering that these people had to endure, the same people he refers to as moving to the other side of the street out of respect? How anyone could make their mouth say what he did TODAY is beyond me! The pain and suffering that was placed on this race should never be forgiven! How Stupid. Just look at the mess since Race mixing, taking prayer out of schools, and making abortions legal. As a white southerner who lived before the evil civil rights acts of 1964, I know how good it was. Blacks in my home town would cross over to the other sidewalk out of respect when my mom & dad and I would walk down the sidewalk. The blacks had their section of town and whites had theirs. Separating the Races worked. We would leave and go on vacation for weeks at a time and leave our doors unlocked, we didn't have to worry about robbery. Now with Black Crime always on the increase we have to lock doors in the daytime. When are Blacks going to realize they can control their own future, Stop having babies out of wedlock, Stop the Rap Crap that causes crime, If you behave as normal citizens we will treat you as such. Like the looting in New Orleans after Katrina, It would not even cross my mind to loot someones store. Power was out, flood waters was over everything, they were coming out of stores with baskets of Tennis Shoes and DVD Players. Blacks created the problem, Actually Abraham Lincoln Started it by the Emancipation Proclimation, the foul document that freed the slaves. Lincoln had no authority in the Confederacy. Took the labor force from the people. If we had won the war between the states things would be much better. The Glorious Confederacy, Long may she be remembered as a bright and glorious time, where life was good, bring her back, we need to secceed from the union again.

I am a African American whose Ancestors were litterally RIPPED away from their homeland, their families packed away on on ships as if they were animals, many of them died or either watched their family members die from diseases that were a result of the filthy conditions aboard these horrible slave ships. Many of them cast overboard for the sharks to devour. I am not advocating violence , however there is one thing I do know as ,and that is if the freed slaves were "rampaging the south murdering" it was in self defense! I am sure that there were many white folk who resented the idea that they were no longer in a position where they could control the lives of these "HUMAN BEINGS" and as an act of revenge , took their anger out on the freed slavse and in self defense the "Freed Slaves" had no other choice but to defend themselves... Teach your children what you like, however I will definitely teach my children about the trans-atlantic slave trade and the atrocities that that occured as a result of white man's inferiority complex. I will also tell them about their African Ancestors who were warriors, kings, queens, pyramid builders, astronomers, mathmeticians...

An interesting, if disheartening, exhibit. It is important that we educate ourselves and our children about racism and bigotry, so that we can try and avoid it. We also have to ask ourselves, are any sterotypes okay? I was looking at some of the other things in this exhibit on youtube and noticed that one sterotype that was considered black was the "mama". The description given of this type was not that different from the "robust" Italian or Greek mothers that are often portrayed in pop culture.

I have mixed emotions about this museum and its exhibits. I have learned more than what I knew just by this website alone, however, if these artifacts aren't shown to the people who need to see them (i.e. young african american children) how will it assist us in the change that is needed so badly for those of African descent. The Bible says that they shall know the truth and the truth shall make them free. I think if many black people understood how they were targeted for ruin and disgrace on so many levels, it may help them to understand how to strategize and overcome the hateful crimes that came up against them in years past and how these same evils are affecting them now. We cannot change the things that happened to us in the past, however, armed with information, we can certainly arm ourselves and our children to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future. The genocide of the black man is still on the rise, just look at the prisons and state pens.

I think it's great that a collection of these things has come together. I also believe that African-Americans are the ONLY stereotyped race. I am white. I have no prejudiced feelings towards others just for their skin but I believe the hate, genocide, and evil comes from every race

Thank you for bringing this exhibit out and into the open. Not all but most of the rap community needs to see, that in most of their music videos, they are recreating this racist caricatures of the past. The information from this exhbit, needs to be shown in classrooms, across America. To remind some of the young people of today that when they are seen calling each other "Bo" and "Nigga" etc...they are keeping these types of racial stereotypes alive. The term "nigga" has No good meaning, no matter if you use it as a type of greeting to a friend. The next time anyone use the words "nigga", "niggah" or whatever way you us it, just ask you parents or your grandparents, if they feel the word "nigga" is ok to use. African Americans were verbally attached daily from whites with this term. So think before the next time you greet a friend with the term "nigga".

Again knowledge is power... As someone once said "When you know better you do better" and this exhibit, will educate you to be proactive in educating the ignorant who still find these images exceptable.

It seems as a people and a nation, that we still have a long, very long way to go. I look at the spelling of the words in the comments, and it disheartned me that people post comments, without thinking about how they are going to say or spell it. Comedians are not entertainers for one. They are comic reliefs that provide that get away from it all moment and by doing that they reflect on the bu&&%%%$ of the raw deals and shady happenings of our everyday lives. The criminal process takes place when you start stereotyping individuals or race and try to make it a way of life.

The artifacts in this exhibit and in the Jim Crow Museum are a living example of true evil in the world. It's almost unbearable for me to look at them, and yet, if they exist, this is where such things belong - in exhibits and museums that are intended to let us really look at what evil is and what it can do. To sweep anything like this part of our history under a rug is perhaps to doom ourselves to repeating it. So I thank the museum for providing it and thanks to PBase for showing it online. But looking at the manifestations of hate and fear and evil is almost unbearable for me.

Tears....These things are so painful to observe. Until recently I was unaware of the depth of the remaining racism and its true origins. I am a white woman. my children are biracial and desrve to know what this country was/is really like.They are old enough now (college/highschool).These things are awkward but Hiding the truth pretends it never happened. White people (some I am related to) have been so afraid of the power and beauty of African people. Happy Independance Day to all American citizens of color who's ancestors Built this nation. I will continue to fight the shameful presence of racial intolerance.

Those of you who have left, and who intend to leave, less than "insightful" comments (although I guess you wouldn't know it, in that case) should be aware that your comments themselves are a study in the sociology of racism. It's amazing how some people, untutored in the history of this nation, unaware of or oblivious to the experience of others, and seemingly lacking the ability to imagine what it would be like to be reviled and labeled "subhuman," will drop into a website such as this and provide what is essentially evidence for the position that the website is advancing.

In this case, that racism is still alive and well in America, fed by stereotypes and personal ignorance.

I guess this is suppose to educate people. Some of the things I have seen in this exhibit are down right fucked up. As a afircan american this degrades my culture. And though I will never understand why in the hell White americans felt that they were better then us I do realize that this was/is a part of my history. With history being the key word. The biggest thing I can do is forgive them for they no not what they do wrong. Who am I to judge that is for the Lord and the Lord alone. I FORGIVE WITH LOVE IN MY HEART. SHAKE

I concur with the comment posted by guest; this exhibit represents a time in American history when people felt the same way as you do about those artifacts. Funny? Harmless? To be mocked, paraded, belittled, separated, and in many cases murdered is not, to me, funny and causes obvious harm to the subject. The purpose of the exhibit is to prevent such events from occuring and to further the attempts at achieving a society free of racial discrimination.
