Hi Tom I absolutely love your photos! Many hours spent getting the perfect shot! I am an artist and would love the opportunity to paint your in-flight bufflehead duck. Would you give me permission I always give credit to the photographer. 🙏😊

Hey Tom,
Back in 2009, I asked you if I could "borrow" images for a slide presentation and you enthusiastically agreed. I'm hoping I can come back asking for more permission to use images for a video we are producing for the California Bluebird Recovery Program. I appreciate all your help!

Dear Sir,
I have seen your pic of tropicbirds in your website. Now I am preparing a handbook on the Birds of Thailand in Thai language. Since it is impossible to find a pic of tropic bird in Thailand (one record for each species) so I would like to ask you may I have your pics of tropicbirds in this handbook. Your kind consideration on this matter is highly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,

Thanks, Tom, for giving us access to your wonderful bird photographs.

I'm getting ready for a vacation along the Monterey Bay with my 6 year old granddaughter and I'm using your photos to create a simple visual checklist to help us identify some of the birds we see.

I have just discovered your site ... wonderful photographs, and wonderful information! I was able to identify a hermit thrush which was taking a bath in the my birdbath at my community garden plot in Palo Alto ... fabulous! So nice to have this resource! Thank you!

Beautiful photographs! I was wondering if I might use one of an albatross for a poster I am creating (I'm a tribal college student doing an internship and looking at wing structure)? Of course I will credit you with name and web address. If that's okay please let me know and thank you very much either way!

Mr, Grey, I found your site through sheer luck. Thank you so much for your photos Excellent. I have shared your web site with 2 people today: a disabled birder in New Mexico & a Chinese brush work teacher. Neither of them will use your photos but hopefully, gain inspiration from them. Tom, you have a couple of photos of peeps in flight that I would like to link to in a post to the OKbirds listserv. The post discusses the flight markings of sandpipers relevant to some recently posted photos. The two photos are your images 127447717 and 139440773. The first shows Least Sandpipers flying and the secon shows both Least and Western.

Tom -- Thank you for sharing those magnificent photos. As an amateur birder/photographer, I'm inspired by the detail and beauty you've accomplished with your equipment. Keep it up!

Tom, really enjoyed my visit to your pages. You get great results from your gear - identical equipment to that I use. Your yard birs gallry is great and I liked the Monterey pelagic stuff too - long time since I was there!

Hi Tom -- We used your wonderful website to identify immature birds in a stick-nest near our pond (often frequented by heron, egret, etc) We THINK these are young green heron. The photo is so cool! Do you ever want to add to your collection for identification purposes? or are you only using photos you took. Nice site for identification! Thanks! Alice & Dan

Tom, My wife and I have just returned home from a birding trip to Alaska and I was fortunate to catch the Snow Buntings' courtship display in Barrow. What made me smile was the male which got off the female's back and stuck his head up in the air, as if to say "Aren't I a clever boy". It all only lasted about 30 seconds but what a privelege to see.

Best wishes,
Graham Weston (England)

Tom, your photos are absolutely awe-inspiring. As a fledgling photographer with (out my back door) access to many wonderful species, I'm thrilled to have come across your galleries. I have lots of night herons here and see juveniles often, but never the fuzzy little fledgelings. Still not sure how to tell the difference between the yellow-crowned and black-crowned juveniles. Anyway, I'm enjoying your galleries immensely. Thank you for sharing your lovely work. ~ Dana

I just now saw a bird I had never seen before, neither among the residents nor migratory birds. It was small like a wren, with a completely black head and neck, orange breast, white underfeathers and dark wings. The tail feathers were a combination. I watered the front yard and it was bathing on the leaves of a kumquat tree.

Hi Tom,
Oh my gosh! Almost needed oxygen when I found your website! Your images are...well...I just can't find a suitable adjective! Very special indeed. I am really coming a-begging. I am a volunteer naturalist with an Audubon Society in southern CA. and am in the process of putting together several Power Point presentations on birds and other animals for kids ages 5-11 in the hope of instilling in them an appreciation of nature. I am currently doing one on nature's home-builders and am including Cliff Swallows. (It's so dang hard to get photos that are not copyrighted.) I am wondering if I may use some of your images of that species in the Power Point. Credit inserted, of course. The PP will not be sold or used for profit in any way. Oh you must be weary of folks like me! But I want to do the right thing by asking. Thank you at least for the joy of seeing your images. Keep up the great work! Humbly, Gillian

Love your Pictures Tom--i see you spend time at the east bay regional park district--i was a police officer there for 19 yrs and 17 of those yrs i was a detective and loved photography then as much as now. I moved up here to lake Oroville 2 yrs ago and doing a lot of Bird photography. I see one of your admires Donna Drake needs some help--I take dead tree branches and mount them in a bucket of a little cement and put them near feeders so the birds land on them away from the feeder for a better picture.
Donna Drake 24-Apr-2009 17:07
Very beautiful bird photos! I found your site trying to identify the female Bullock Oriole. Found her! Currently not working and home during the day, I have found my backyard to be the home of a pair of Bullock Orioles and a pair of Northern Cardinals. I remove the screen from my kitchen window and photograph them from about 15 feet away. It makes a great blind! I have not been able to capture the female Oriole. She is shy and quick. I also have Lazuli Buntings, Gila Woodpeckers, Gamble Quail, Hummingbirds and endless Finches. My goal is to photograph them away from the feeders. I only have a small kodak easy share digital camera. Any photo tips? Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!

Hello Tom, Thank you for sharing your beautiful site and your love for birds. I have just recently moved out to Sun City, CA and love to watch these lovely creatures from my private home and a new comer has come about. He is a black bird with blue or white eyes. I browsed through your gorgeous collection and didnt see a picture of him. Would you be able to tell me what kind he is? He is quite a character, with all these magnificent sounds!
Thank you for your time and sharing your site!

Hi Tom, I've got to tell you that I am COMPLETELY blown-away by your fantastic work in these galleries... I'm a PBASE member (Photoarrow), but a lady named Kelly ( included a link to your site to illustrate a bird she was commenting on... Wow! What wonderful bird shots... You must be an incredibly patient person to get all of these fantastic images... Seeing your work, I'm going to throw my Sony DSC-F717 away and go get myself a Canon 20D and a 500mm lens...
I was telling Kelly that one of my goals in life is to learn all of the bird names, so now I know what to use as my reference... Thanks a whole lot, Tom, and good luck with that knee... Best regards, Donald Kinney

I've just returned home to the UK after a holiday in Florida. Your site has been the best of the many I've been surfing in helping me get a positive ID on some of the birds I saw and took pics of. A lot of pics and illustrations on other sites still left me in doubt as to exactly what things were but the accuracy of the colours and markings on yours were incredibly helpful. I'm new to photography and birding and your pics have inspired me!
Glen Tepke11-Dec-2005 19:43
Tom -- thanks for the comment on the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper pics. You have a lot of great shots here as well. Have you been to Alviso for the STSA?

I also have a DSLR and a 100-400 but I think of that as a supplement to digiscoping, not a replacement. The combo is very versatile -- digiscoping for the birds that are too far for the DSLR, and the DSLR for closer birds that are flying or moving too fast for digiscoping. It's a fair amount of gear to lug, but probably no heavier than a DSLR with a 500 f/4 and more flexible. Of course, a 3 mp Coolpix doesn't produce the same image quality as a DSLR, but it is possible to get pretty sharp stuff with good gear and technique -- check these out:

Admittedly, those birds were pretty close. Good shooting.

I enjoyed you Los Banos series; good framing and focus. A few Questions if you have the time, I know that I'm pretty slow getting to comments on my page so I can expect no more from others. When birding do you hand-hold or use some sort of platform? Secondly I am also in northern California and was wondering what feild guide you perfer for bird identification.
My learning bird shots are at and there are a few I have no idea what they are, hence the need for a better feild guide.I find that i can more easily I.D. a photo of a bird than the flitting creatures in the feild.
Thanks, Brennan O'Brien

With all of your photos and your incredibly user-friendly site, I'm learning more about birds and cameras each time I visit. Thank you. Forget teaching; Write a series of bird books instead:-)
