The Photographer

Greenbush, Wisconsin

The reason that I go to the Wade House re-enactment is because I really enjoy the "characters". I have found that most of the attendees have an actual character from the past that they are portraying. This article sets the scene http://www.midwestweekends.com/plan_a_trip/history_heritage/frontier_history/civil_war_wade_house.html if you are interested.

This man is a photographer from Minnesota. He makes tintype photos for the re-enactors. It is his business and he is said to be very good at it. I watched him make a tintype of this soldier. First he focused, then prepared the plate and inserted it into the camera. At this point the subject had to stand very still for the exposure. After the exposure, the photographer took the plate to a little black-out tent that he had and developed it. Here is the tintype soaking in the water bath at the end of the process. If you notice, it is reversed from the soldier's pose.[img][/img] [img][/img]

Where else can you learn this fascinating stuff other than TTL, thanks so much.
But what is a "Yankee scalawag" - is that where the term scallywag comes from?

Great picture Cindy. It really makes me appreciate the ease with which we can take, and retake, digital images. Unlike some, I don't miss my old darkroom at all.

Looks like a "Yankee scalawag" to me...
I bet it was fascinating watching him do his thing, Cindy.
Got you took this nice shot!

Thank you very much Hal, Terry and Bob.
It was very interesting to watch the tintype production. I got a whiff of the chemicals and I'd say it was a good thing to be doing this out in the breeze.
I don't know much about the camera Hal, but I heard him say that he kept his "original" at home. This is a better look at the one he had at the re-enactment. [img][/img]

these days. This is a great portrait!

I agree with Hal. This is a really good portrait
study. Wouldn't it be fun to play with that camera!
Beautifully done, Cindy. Your work is so consistently
fine.

A very fine portrait study Cindy. He would love it.
And a fine old vintage camera he has there.
Looks like it takes about 10" negatives or plates.
