Ōtsu 大津

Capital and largest city in Shiga Prefecture, Ōtsu lies just over the mountains to the east of Kyōto. Briefly the capital of Japan in the 7th century, it is most notable for its historic temples, especially Ishiyama-dera (where The Tale of Genji was written), Mii-dera and the nearby mountaintop complex of Enryaku-ji.
