The Bridge

Mostar, Bosnia

This was one of the most wonderful bridges in the world. It was destroyed by HVO soldiers in late 93. If that wasn't a war crime, then we might as well abolish the war crimes tribunal. I spent two days shooting the bridge in 1980. This guy made a living by jumping from the bridge. Tourists paid him about $12 US back then. When I return to Mostar next year I'm going to attempt to find him. He had a tattoo of the bridge across his chest.

I went to Mostar in 2008 and watched guys jump from the rebuilt bridge....the tradition is reborn.

I'm sure the whole time the Hungarians and the Germans were doing the work the locals stood around taking cheap shots at the guys doing the work. These people need to ask themselves why they're always depending on foreigners to get things done.

The rebuilding of the bridge was sponsored by the Worldbank and the UNESCO with 15 million Euros and lasted from June 2002 until Juli 2004, when it was officially opened for the public. Retrieval of the fragments from the Neretva river and the actual building work was carried out by the Hungarian Army. Analysis of the historical materials and techniques used by the ancient builders was done by the German engineering firm LGA Bautechnik, Nürnberg.

It has been rebuilt, by the same technuiqe it was built the first time (by some Turckish company specialised in that)
the project was partially financed by the Croatian goverment, I've read it somewhere
A real nonsence to destroy it in the first place

I've just finished reading Ivo Andric's book 'The Bridge Over The Drina' and absolutely echo your sentiments. I know things are tense in Mostar, but are there plans to rebuild it?
