Nene

The nene is the only remaining native Hawaiian goose. It is a smaller descendent of the canadian goose, with similar behavior. They live in high elevation grasslands, enjoying a variety of berries. The bird below (nene #110) is pictured in a typical habitat at Hakalau NWR, standing behind an ohelo berry bush. You can see the distinctive bunching pattern of its neck plumage.
