'Weldy' (ARS 931): Elepidote rhododendron. (('Pygmalion' x haematodes) x yakushimanum, Exbury form). Openly funnel-shaped flowers with 7 frilly-edged lobes are 2.75" across x 2" long; deep and strong red (53A-C) in bud, opening light and pale purplish pink (55C,D; 56A-D) fading to lighter than pale purplish pink (56D) and yellowish white (158D). The truss of 24 flowers is 5.25" wide and there is no calyx. Leaves are mucronate (apex) and cuneate (base), 2.75" long x 1" wide, with slightly woolly, white indumentum. The shrub is 5' high x 5' wide 19 years from seed, and blooms early June.
