3: The Old Dubbo Gaol

The old Dubbo Gaol is the town's #2 tourist attraction. (The Western Plains Zoo is #1.) You can see representations of prisoners attempting escape, sawing wood, trying to sleep, or working in the kitchen. If you are there at the right time, you will be lined up as part of an "entertainment" in which a uniformed prisons officer (presumably a member of a local dramatic society) interrogates the tourists about an escaped woman prisoner who is eventually identified in the line-up but escapes. All great fun. They don't demonstrate the hangings, but all the kit is there, and a padded cell too, so think before taking your children: the zoo is gentler.
