Winston Tunnel, one last look.jpg

Jo Davies County, Illinois

The Abandoned Winston Tunnel (CGW) near Galena Illinois. I had done a lot of reading about this tunnel, the men that built it, the trains that ran through it, and the interesting ventilation system it utilized. Standing at the west portal marveling at the fan house and all the work it took to make this tunnel, in the distance you could hear the trains blast their horns as they ran along the Mississippi on the BNSF Route to the Twin Cities. If you closed your eyes you could swear that the line was still in service.

I lived 1/3 mile east of Rodden from 1950 to 1956. I certainly remember the whistle sounds from the tunnel to the "Rodden yards" , the Twp road and the later at Hanover Junction. The whistles whistles were especially sharp on the minus 20 degree days in the winter. Remember counting 40 car trains behind 2-10-4's at the township road while setting on the school bus waiting for the train to clear at 7:30 am. many mornings from 1951 to "56.

My research has located so far six railroad tunnels in IL : this one, a short curved bore nearby in East Dubuque, three tunnels in Pope and Johnson counties on the old IC route, and Tunnel Hill which is now part of a bike trail. Does anyone know of any more than this ?
