1967 - Janet Province and Anita Petrogallo on the South Beach Fishing Pier with South Beach in the background

South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida

This was the only South Beach when we were growing up and it was the area between the fishing pier and the jetty on the north side of Government Cut. The rest of the area on Miami Beach was called South Shore. Now the term South Beach covers miles of Miami Beach because people want to cash in on the name.

My name is Paul. I was very young back then, but Holy Joe, Charles Cline, if I remember right, was a friend of my dad's. We sometime accompanied him to the beach and would sing and play instruments with him. People would through money at him, and pop bottles and different things. He had quite a back-story that nobody knew. He was a man with a huge heart for God and people. He suffered a lot of sorrow in his life. He sold window blinds to make a living, drove a pink Cadillac with a sign in the rear window that said, "A blind man drives this car."

Right now obviously there is no pier but somehow this area you guys called south beach , is called nikki beach for some reason. i dont know why but i can see why the area just went with a different name. I enjoy looking at these old photos and specially ready what you guys have to say and your stories well , stay safe. bye.

Good memories, Jim. I almost drowned there in a riptide after a hurricane in 1964 or 1965 down towards the rock jetty. Bob Zimmerman and I were body surfing and the incoming waves kept smashing us down into the sand bottom offshore and then sucking us out to sea instead of propelling us towards the beach. Steve Belleme is up at Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale International Airport now and I see him every other year or so. The bagel bakery was superb - we were in paradise and didn't know it. Holy Joe is no doubt looking down on us by now? Great times were had by many on this beach.

Remember surfing during a hurricane at south beach with Art Jansik, Vic Whitaker and myself, Jim Whitaker, (almost drowned!) Used to do back flips off the dog track parking lot onto the sand with Steve Bellamy and his brother. Had a 10' 6" Gardener surfboard. Used to camp overnight on the beach and have a campfire ! Eat freshly made bagles from the bagle shop across the street by the Hotel Leonard. Listen to "Holy Joe" preaching up and down the beach.

I was amazed by that also, Robert. And you're right, it was the place to be back then.

Can you believe how many surfers were there? And there were not even any waves that day.I guess it was about "Being there" as much as it was about surfing.
