Carousel Update! Eureka! Hello All...Incredibly, I've purchased an oversized B&W photo of the carousel on eBay. The photo was taken by Miami Herald photographer Ralph Pabst on Sept, 25th 1971. I was present when the photo was taken during after school hours. This carousel was so much a part of Miami's less visited attractions but still was enjoyed by thousands. Also, I've since acquired photos of it in its current condition. Sadly, what remains is very little. Best to all: Richard A. Though defunct in the early 60s an enterprising carnival owner by the name of Barney Corey brought the park back to life in 1969/1970. Barney & his wife Marie placed their last few remaining amusement rides at the park, of which one was the massive 1913 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel. After failing @ Funland park, Barney & Marie purchased property on Flagler street & NW 19th ave. The Flagler street property had been a small amusement park through the middle 60s but had been closed for a couple of years. The PTC carousel was removed from Funland and prominently placed out on the corner of the Flagler street location. Does anyone have photos of either park and more specifically the PTC carousel? Came to Miami in 1969 as a Southern Bell long distance operator. Met Minot F. (Mickey) Jelke in his clothing store, Lana's Inc., at 141 E. Flagler Street, married April 18, 1969. Lived in Bay Harbor Islands on Bay Harbor Drive, bought a home in San Souci Estates in 1971 or 1972, 1940 NE 118th Rd. We loved the nightlife, dining mainly at The Post and Paddock Room, or at home, or at the Jockey Club of Miami, 11111 Biscayne Blvd. WHAT a life, it was great. Many fabulous memories, I left in 1980.

The below comments are from Darlene Meeks who posted them under a photo that has nothing to do with her comments and that would be seen by far more people here than where it was: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I also found a picture of the First National Bank of Miami, where I worked from 1964 to 1968 in the proof and transit department. 1967, I married my husband, he went to Miami Edison and graduated in 1963, he was in Future Farmers of America. During his junior/senior year he had his own chicken farm in Davie, Florida, had thousands of chickens and had a route selling eggs. It was called the Meeks Lazy Acre Farm. Gave that up to pursue the ministry. Between that he met me, we had a blind date and 2 years later we married. We were in the ministry with The Salvation Army for almost 30 years before retiring. Retired in Westminster, Md for 8 years, then moved to Atlanta, GA., where all of our sons, daughters-in-law live and grandchildren. I lost the love of my life November 20, 2012, just 2 days before Thanksgiving. He had been on dialysis for over a year, had a very hard time with it, plus having a lot of other health issues. The Center Movie Theatre in Edison Center was the hub of my universe growing up in Miami's NW area. My mom would give my two sisters and me 75 cents each and with that we were treated to two full movies, one serial, ten cartoons, a soda. popcorn and a candy of our choice. We also usually had a yo-yo contest on stage to boot. Had enough money left over to buy a birch beer and a burger at the Royal Castle or a couple of fresh donuts at Shell City on the way home. Would share this with my "girlfriend" at the time, who later became my wife for 48 years and counting. What great memories!

Does anyone remember the Malaluca hotel on collins avenue? . I was a kid in the mid 1960's and stayed there several times. We used to walk into town to the grocery store and down the beach to a coffee shop w awesome pecan rolls....there was also a large house down the beach with concrete walls around it and when we peeked over them we could see painted murals along the walls of the house.... I m sure all of this seems much more grandiose than it was since I was 7-10 years old but would love to know just where it was.....:?

Your collection of pictures is amazing. I live on 9th street and 1st avenue, northwest, in a highrise. Miami has completely changed, especialy this neighborhood which borders on Overtown. It seemed much more cohesive and ordered then than it does now. From my balcony I can see block after block of parking lots and empty lots. I now realize these were fuly developed,thriving downtown neighborhoods before the urban blight that destroyed them took over. Thank you for posting.

Sinced my earlier blogs in 2010 the South Miami Beach 23 acres that I bought from Realtor Moe Katz in 1956...have vanashed. Some one just stole those 15 parcels of one to three acres and built Condos on the land. The Big story should hit the media in 2013. Subscribers who were interested should know the acres are in South Miami Beach not South Dade County as Moe Katz thought when he sold them 56 years ago.

Don I should have read your great site before posting the heavier site below mthis one. I remember all of the great resteraunts and bars another reader posted. AND Sloppy Joes, the , Racquet club on the beach that put out the greatest roast beef spread every Friday night FREE for years. The membership as I recall was $25 or $50. per year. There were other great stops on the drive from Lauderdal3 I remember that the Racqued had another FREE Prime Rib smorhisborg on Saturday nights so our week ends were routine. Many bars had $.25 bar drinks and servad great odoruves. What a $5. night including a decent tip for the times. The trip to Miami was always worth it . I just have to say it! Hello Don: In 1956 after settling in Ft. Lauderdale, in 1952 a fdellow named Moe Katz, a realtor also from NYC called to sell me some acreage in south Miami. I asked how deep the water was and he replyed, straight faced, "Not much over a foot". I bought the acreage that he periodically offered because it was the price I would pay to watch a cocoroach run across a table. Cheap. So cheap that my many businesses over the years blocked out my legal pad the I kept these transactions on. As the years flew by I think it was in 2008 that someone at a party told a story about the great deal he made on the west coaast of Florida on an acre of ;land the he forgot about for many years. My my question for you Don is, how far down on Colins Ave would you have to go to be a foot deep in water, in 1956? Even an estimate would help. Hi, everyone. I grew up in Miami 1945-1981. I love this website! Don, is the restaurant you're trying to remember "Port of Call"? I remember that it practically sat on the water and had a nautical theme throughout. The wait staff brought you tiny lime sherbet cones to "cleanse your palette" between courses. I was quite impressed as a teenager going there on a date. I grew up in a rural area called Uleta, and we children would walk down to Velda Farms dairy and buy shaved ice so that we could sell snow cones in the summer. Wonderful times. Pumpernicks is gone, as are Wolfies, Corky's, Juniors, Chippys, and even Rascal House finally bit the dust last year in favor of a branch of Epicure. The closest I have found is TooJays, great Rueben sandwiches. I grew up in NMB, S Miami, Gables and what is now (not then) Pinecrest, (Palmetto 76) from 60 - 76 and weekends on the Beach with grandparents and used to frequent the best restaurants, the above, Red Diamod Inn, Formosa, Santacroce, Sorrento, Piccolo, Roney Pub, Fun Fair, Coney Island, Sam & Carls, later Marshall Majors. My Dad had a restaurant at 72nd and the highway, Lobster Trap (had been a Bonanza, then Valenti's bought it before they moved to S Miami) Great website, even though I am kinda a newcomer compared to some. Went to Carver (1st year of busing but that's a whole other chapter) Ponce, then Palmetto.

Alan, that sounds like Mike Gordon's Seafood Restaurant to me. We loved going there and we miss it. Unfortunately it was demolished years ago. They'll eventually build yet another condo there but development has stalled due to the current huge glut of condos in the Miami area. Don

can anyone tell me the name of the restaurant that was located at 79th street causeway and ne bayshore ct.? the entrance was located on bayshore ct. it was a large, one-story structure that had a deck across the back that faced biscayne bay. it was a miami favorite during the 1960's......... anybody?

Anyone remember "Jacks Drive In" on 54th Street??? Famous for the footlong hot dog and home-made chili??? Had the "curb" girls? That was my dad...BJo

I use to spend all summer on Abbott Ave at the Abbott Ter Motel every year for about 10 years as a kid. Thanks for these memories. My mom recently passed away & these reminded me of her. She would have loved this site.. thank you

Thanks for posting these shots. My family used to stay at the Bikini Motel for at least 1 or 2 months each year during the winter and growing up Miami was my second home town. It really brings back memories.

I thought it was great growing up in Miami in the 60's and 60's. The Hi-Slide on US 1; WOW I haven't thought of that in ages. I do remember the burlap bags we slid on.
