'Southland'

'Southland' (ARS 944): Lepidote rhododendron. (minus var. chapmanii x keiskei, prostrate form). H(1971), G(1976), N, I(1988), and REG(1994): August E Kehr, Hendersonville NC. Slightly fragrant, open campanulate, 5-lobed, smooth-edged fls are 1.25" across x 1" long, apricot in bud, opening light yellowish pink (36B) with brown speckles in throat; calyx lacking. Ball truss of 10 fls is 2" wide x 2" high. Lvs held 3 years, elliptic, flat, broadly acute (apex), cuneate (base), 1.75" x 0.75", scaly below; petiole 0.25" long, green, scaly. Shrub very floriferous, 2' high x 2.5' wide 10 years from cutting; plant and bud hardy to at least -5°F. April.
