The Feast of Peleus, 1872-81

Edward Burne-Jones, 1833-1898

oil on canvas

This painting depicts the wedding feast of Thetis and
Peleus, King of Thessaly, attended by classical gods
and goddesses. Burne-Jones shows the moment when the
figure of Discord, lurking on the right with bat wings
and snakes in her hair, tries to cause conflict at the
feast. The god Mercury (kneeling in winged hat and boots)
holds the golden apple brought by Discord to be presented
to the most beautiful goddess. Venus, Minerva and Juno,
on the left, approach with outstretched hands, all eager
for the prize.
