1930's - Fowey Rocks Lighthouse Keeper Hamilton "Hamp" Sharpe Perry polishing the Fowey Rocks Light Fresnel Lens

Fowey Rocks Light, 7 miles south of Cape Florida

Thank you to Roberta Perry Hughes for contributing this image of her grandfather Hamilton "Hamp" Perry Hughes polishing the Fresnel lens inside the Fowey Rocks Light where he was lighthouse keeper from the 1920s until the early 1940s. See the next image for a photo of the lens that is now preserved at the Aids to Navigation School at the Coast Guard's Reserve Training Center, Yorktown, Virginia.

Tim, I forwarded your comments and your e-mail address to Roberta Perry Hughes and possibly she will provide you with more information about her grandfather in the photo.

We'd love to get a few photos of lighthouse keeper Hamilton Perry for a story in Lighthouse Digest. Images can be e-mailed to Editor@LIghthouseDigest.com or Timh@LHDigest.com. Hopefully, someone can share with us for a story.

Note the four giant light bulbs in the fore ground. They are mounted in an automatic changer. If the bulb in use burns out, the next one is automatically rotated into place. The keeper can then change the burned out light bulb next time he's up there and the light is never out for more than a few seconds.
