I meant to ask if you have photo's or anyone reading has. Someone may want to share. I mentioned that Ed came up stairs from underground in the Florida City site and the researcher mentioned that he had never hears of Ed living underground. I remember vividly as I was only 5 or 6 years old and never seen a person that lived underground. I remember that the stairs were to my left as we entered each time we visited

I lived in Homestead from 1933 to 1940. My cousin, Leon Chambliss, was the go to person for photography, radio, television, boat building, etc. He made many photos. I mentioned on the Coral Castle web site that our family visited with Ed often & a person from Australia emailed me to see if I had photos as he was researching and many would benefit. We were very poor and I have only a few photos of the Keys. A relative Jim Anstis of WPB gave Leons's photos to a sister.

I was in the middle of a story...is this an appropriate place to do such?...when something went wrong and lost everything. About the Little River neighborhood already going down in the late 1970's when I arrived. I can tell a portion of the 79th St Hotel remains today but I do not know what it was called when it was built possibly in the 1930's? The Sheffman's owned it back then. I can remember my customers that came in daily and what they drank, glasses they preferred, how they sat when I was a bartender at The Little Riviera then owner by George Stidham, a former jockey who lived in Miami Springs and would sometimes drive in and park his white Silver Cloud Rolls Royce outside. Every Kentucky Derby Day he always had a big party...As for the hotel, it was my understanding that the 3rd floor where I resided used to be a ballroom. There were stairs that were tiled that led from the street but even back in the 70s, there were wrought iron gates chained and padlocked. There was also a bar called The Track and Shore and an Italian guy owned it and I was not much in there as it seemed I worked all the time at night, I'd hear the word 'bookie' thrown around once in a while. At The Little Riviera Lila and Bonnie were the two day shift bartenders. Lila's husband stayed around for most of her shift as he didn't trust the neighborhood. I understood. She kept her hair dyed black, wore fake lashes and had beautiful blue eyes and though I never saw her hair down, I supposed it was rather long. I remember going in to relieve her one hot August day and she was crying. I asked her what was wrong. "Elvis died today." Silly me is shedding tears as I write this as now, I still have his "Aloha From Hawaii" album but at the age of 18, I thought he was 'old' so I wasn't affected as Lila was. Now, as I've had the opportunity to see so many videos of him on YouTube..ah..the internet can be so wonderful and so evil at the same time...Now that I know more of him, the shock to hear that he thought nobody would remember him, I shed tears now as I just had a birthday and am now 56. Many of my regulars were of that age and many much older, Perhaps you can tell me if I should leave more stories elsewhere? It would be amazing if someone is still alive and remember, those that were a bit younger. My former boyfriend who was 35 just turned 70 back in June. And when I saw your name, I about bust a gut as my first husband's name is Don Boyd! Life is funny...

Some NORTH MIAMI history: Originally the town of "Arch Creek", the area was incorporated as the "Town of Miami Shores", which was renamed the "Town of North Miami" in 1931. Then in 1953, the town was renamed the "City of North Miami." Seven miles (11 km) of Atlantic Oceanfront beach land property from the Broward County line southward to Surfside were removed from the town limits as a result of a 1931 Florida Supreme Court decision. The 1926 hurricane ended plans for a causeway to deliver municipal services to that area of town. With no services being received, the beach area instituted a lengthy court lawsuit to separate and form their own community. The wealthy Shoreland Company, located to the south of the Town, lobbied the 1931 Florida Legislature to officially grant their huge development the name "Village of Miami Shores". The Legislature did so. It also passed an official act abolishing "Town of Miami Shores" as a name. The next step was for the local population to choose a new name. The municipality was renamed The Town of North Miami. During the Depression years, in 1933, Mrs. Cecille Sevier and Mrs. Ella S. Klefeker became the first two women elected to the Town Council. The 1940s census stated that 1,973 inhabitants lived in the "Town of North Miami". At the end of World War II in 1945, the large and constant influx of former military veterans and their young families changed the face of North Miami by ushering in a great growth period. Homebuilding, road building, shops, stores, and office business construction now continued for decades almost without stopping. By 1951 it was reported nationally that North Miami was one of the fastest growing towns in the United States. During this time, the growing community needed a high school, so in 1951 construction started for North Miami High School. In August 1954, North Miami High School opened its doors for the children of the growing community. Partially to meet this challenge of fast growth, the voters of North Miami in 1952 voted to adopt a new charter and a new name. The new charter, enacted as an official statute of the Florida Legislature on May 27, 1953 provided for the establishment of a full-time administrative head (City Manager form of government) to carry out the policies of the elected Mayor/Council. The new and present name officially introduced on this date - the City of North Miami

Grew up in Allapattah, but attended Miami Jackson, Coconut Grove Jr High, Miami Tech but finished school in a country school in Alva, 12 miles east of Ft. Don...Just a P.S., here, re: Fowey Rocks Light. Families did not live, in the Light, with the Keep. Only the Keep, & the Assistants, lived there, & were out there for weeks, even months, at a time. Their families lived on the Mainland, in Miami. My grandparents had 4 school age children, when he first went to work at Fowey Rocks, & a toddler or two. They had a total of 9 children, in all, of which my father was the eldest.

Don...Thank you, so very much, for allowing my grandparents to be an integral part of the history of a Miami landmark (Fowey Rocks Lighthouse). My cousin, Mary Perry Johnson, sent me photocopies of most of these images. (Out father's were brothers). I am so very proud of this family history, & so grateful to Mary, for having shared these photocopies with me, so that I could share them with everyone. BTW...the parents, grandparents, aunt, brother, nephew, & twin son & daughter, of Hamilton Sharpe Perry, are all interred in Cocoplum Cemetery, which is also in the Galleries. Again, my heartfelt thanks to you, for allowing my grandfather to shine. Roberta, proud granddaughter of "Hamp" Perry, Keeper of the Light, at Fowey Rocks, ca. 1920's-1939, & beyond.

What a delight! How I ache for the good old days when I attended Hialeah School in Hialeah, and for those boys and girls that I loved so much. Those were the best years of my life, and I am 82 years old. I would truly love to communicate with some of those friends, but have lost contact. The last year that I attended school there was the 6th grade and I believe it was in the year 1937. I am still in good health, but the old memory is not as reliable as it once was. My husband and I moved back to Hialeah after he was discharged from the Air Force, having served during WWII. He worked at the Hialeah Race Track for almost ten years. Our home was on 16th Street, about four blocks from the race track. We will never forget the wonderful friends we met while living there, but unfortunately lost contact with everyone after we moved back to Alabama in 1954. Thanks for posting the beautiful photos. Loved the pictures. I lived in Miami until 1953, what a nice town it was. I went to school at Jackson in Allapatah and lived near 46 st. and 32 ave. It was a beautiful town to grow up in, truly an age of innocence. Doris D. JBL3939016@aol.com
