Miami Area INDIVIDUALS and GROUPS Historical Photos Gallery - All Years - click on image to view

Most of these images were removed from various other galleries to free up space so I can add more images to those appropriate galleries. Since I haven't even scanned my own old family albums yet I would like to keep these types of shots at a minimum for the time being.

However, if you do submit scanned images, please: 1. scan them at 300dpi, 2. scan them at least 3 inches high or 900 pixels high (they will be downsized to 72 or 96dpi and 400 to 425 pixels high) and, 3. save them at high quality level (9 or 10 on the scale) in JPG file format. This will minimize my scarce time trying to enlarge them and fix them up in Photoshop. Also, your scanner will do a much better job if you crop around each photo instead of scanning a flatbed full of multiple photos into one image. Thanks.

In speaking with his wife (Karen) this evening, she was unsure who would be administering this site in the future, but was open to suggestions. Obituary for the grandson of Merrill-Stevens founder. From the Miami Herald: Posted on Sunday, 11.06.11 JAMES C. MERRILL III, 61 James C. Merrill, headed dry dock company, dead at 61 James C. “Jimmy” Merrill III BY ELINOR J. BRECHER James Campbell “Jimmy” Merrill III yearned for a career on the Broadway stage, but after a few youthful roles realized it wasn’t to be and came to Miami, where for nine years he ran his family’s venerable boat-servicing business. Enthralled by the theater since childhood, Merrill served on the Coconut Grove Playhouse’s board of directors while chairing the board of Merrill-Stevens Dry Dock Company. He took over the business after his father died in 1995, and served until it was sold, amid controversy over his leadership, in 2004. His tenure was marked by a family-feud lawsuit that year that pitted his mother and two siblings against him. They alleged that his heavy drinking caused him to mismanage the firm and mishandle its finances. Born Sept. 30, 1950, in Jacksonville, where his great-great-grandfather founded Merrill-Stevens in 1866, Merrill succumbed Oct. 31to a staph infection contracted during a hospital stay in New York for alcohol-related illness, said his son, Kenneth Merrill. Merrill’s first love was the stage, and he made it as far as the original cast of Oliver!, which appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964, the same night that The Beatles made their U.S. television debut. As a teen, Merrill “went to several boarding schools in the Northeast, but he’d run away to New York,’’ his son said. “He easily befriended anyone, especially older people, so he had places to stay and got jobs in various Broadway shows.’’ In the 1970s, he worked in New York as an actor and as a production assistant for the Broadway producer Morton “Morty” Gottlieb, Kenneth Merrill said. Abandoning his hopes for stardom, Merrill came to Miami in 1979 to work for Merrill-Stevens, a world-renowned operation that built 82 U.S. warships during World War II and worked on luxury yachts for high rollers like Malcom Forbes, Coco Chanel and Elizabeth Taylor. Among the firm’s clients: underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau, who brought his dive ship Calypso to Merrill-Stevens for a $500,000 overhaul in 1986. Three years later, the firm was forced out of the Coconut Grove docks, which it had managed for 40 years, and consolidated its business at the Miami River site it had occupied since 1923. “Jimmy was the [firm’s] PR guy,’’ said close friend Byron Matthews, a New York/Miami lawyer. “He didn’t scrape barnacles. He had a real charming way with people. He’d take them to Joe’s and the Bath Club and the Surf Club,’’ and make big-ticket deals. Matthews said that his friend was in a Georgia alcohol-rehabilitation center in 2004 when a power struggle at the firm began gathering steam, resulting in its sale to Vitas Hospice founder Hugh Westbrook. It was sold again, at a bank auction, last June. Although Merrill’s mother sued him, they always remained close, Matthews said. He ultimately reconciled with one of his two sisters, Matthews added. After the company’s sale to Westbrook, Merrill returned to New York. He interviewed actors, writers and directors for Broadway Previews, a television program for New York hotel guests, performed improv comedy, and sang with friends at the Lambs Club in Midtown, Manhattan, his son said. Merrill was divorced from the former Marguerite Paul, his son’s mother. In addition to his son, Merrill is survived by his mother, Roxie Merrill, and sister Roxanna Seely, both of Jacksonville, and sister Eleanor Fowler of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 646 NE 16th St., Miami, to which donations in lieu of flowers are suggested. The body was cremated. George Washington Conger was my great grandfather, so I must be related to Dave Conger. My mother was Lutrelle Conger High and her father (my grandfather) was John B. Conger. Inez Conger Skelton was my mother's sister.
