Shertang la and Sengor

From Jakar we headed over the Shertang la at 3573 metres and the Thrumsing la at 3720 metres to an overnight camp at Sengor. The views from the Shertang la were spectacular and included the highest unclimbed mountain in the world Gangkar Punsum at 7570 metres. Since 1994 climbing of mountains in Bhutan higher than 6000 metres has been prohibited out of respect for local spiritual beliefs and since 2003 mountaineering has been forbidden completely. Gangkhar Puensum may therefor keep its unique status for some time. The highlight of our stop at Sengor was our views of a Satyr Tragopan crossing the road at twilight.
